Vocational scenario

Role
You recently graduated from University, and landed a trainee job at a Data
Consultant firm who specialized in providing Business Data Analysis services to
clients, who traditionally are firms looking for data analysis solutions. Your job at the
trainee level is to provide reports to clients.
Scenario
As a new trainee, you are to complete training to help you refresh your knowledge
gained from your university. As part of this process, you have been asked to
undertake a case study report for a technology firm (you can choose a firm that suits
your preference, preferably of at least medium size). In this report you will investigate
effective and poor ethics with regard to data management and its business and legal
consequences. Also, your report will discuss in detail the data management process
of the organization, and how this process enables its decision making process.

Assignment activity and guidance

Having discussed the case in detail with your supervisor, you agree that the case
study report will need to do the following:
1. Examine examples of effective or poor ethical behaviours and conduct with
regard to data management and the potential consequences this may have.
Guidance: Give two examples of effective or poor ethical behaviour and conduct in
your chosen organization with regard to data management. State potential
consequences of these behaviours.

2. Critically examine the impact of poor ethical behaviours and conduct in a

specific context and the implications this has in business.
Guidance: List an example of poor ethical behaviours and conduct in an organization
of your choice. Clearly explain the mechanism behind how it happened. State the
implications from the example, such as what the consequences were for the
organization, and what the they should do to prevent such a case from happening
again.

3. Critique ethics and conduct in a specific context, to determine both legal and
business consequences of unethical to data analytics and management.
Guidance: Give one example of unethical behaviour with regard to data analytics
and management in your chosen organization. List at least one legal and one
business consequence that resulted from your example of unethical behaviour.
Comment on what the organization can do to minimize these consequences of these
behaviours in the future.

4. Develop appropriate data management processes that can be applied in an

organisational context to improve decision making.
Guidance: Draw a dataflow diagram that illustrate a part of your chosen company’s
data management process. An example of such a diagram explaining how data flows
in a small drink shop taking a customer delivery order is given. The diagram has to
show at least the following stages: data collection, data quality assurance, Data
storage, data analytics and actionable result. Explain how your diagram works, being
specific about each step. For example, in the data collection step, explain and give
example of what data is collected, from where, what format data is in, is it
unstructured or structured data, etc. Explain how the data management process from
the diagram helps your organization make better decisions.

5. Devise a range of data management processes in a specific context that

create accountability and transparency to improve decision-making processes.
Guidance: Using the dataflow diagram that you have made in the previous task,
draw a Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) table that aims to promote
accountability and transparency in your chosen organization’s data management
process. An example of such a RAM is given. Briefly explain how each task functions
and hence highlight the accountability of each person.
Also give examples of another method that promote accountability and transparency
in your chosen organization’s data management process.

6. Create tactical data management processes that specifically align with

organisational strategic decisions and objectives.
Guidance: Give an example of one strategic objective/decision of your organization
which you think the current data management process is not supporting well. Explain
in detail why. How can you change the data management process such that the
mentioned strategic objective/decision is better supported?

Students should take care to write their reports with sufficient details, include
appropriate citations and make sure the report is in an appropriate format (such as
avoid using bullet points or very short sentences/paragraphs, correct bibliography
format, etc).
