Preventive Maintenance

3 .1 Regular Maintenance
The RM210 is designed for long-term, low-maintenance operation. The following section
describes the maintenance procedures. In addition, you are advised to clean and inspect
the entire system on a regular basis, as well as ensure that it is not damaged, corroded, or
defective in any way.

3.2 Maintenance Mode

WARNING: Incorrect measurements and malfunctions
If the device remains in measuring mode, faults with respect to the output of
measured values and signals can be expected while maintenance is being
carried out. These could result in system malfunctions. A reference cycle would
also make it impossible to access the pivoted motorized sections for mainte-
nance.
● Before carrying out maintenance, always switch the device to “Mainte-
nance” mode.
● Coordinate maintenance work with the person responsible for plant opera-
tion.

3.2.1 Switching to maintenance mode

‡ On the connection unit: press the “Maintenance” button.
The device switches to the “Maintenance” operating status:
– The LC display of the connection unit indicates MAINTEN.
– The pivoted motorized sections are swiveled to the measuring position so that they
can be cleaned.
– The “Cycle/Maintenance” relay signal is activated (normally assigned to Relay K1,
depending on parameter settings). It signals to the connected process computer
that measurements cannot be carried out.
– The analog output is retained at the last measured value.
‡ Once you have finished maintenance, press the maintenance button again.
‡ The device carries out a reference cycle and then returns to measuring mode.

3.3 Maintaining the purge-air unit

Maintaining the purge-air unit essentially involves cleaning the filter housing and replacing
the filter insert.
WARNING: Keep the purge-air unit operating!
Never operate the device without purge-air as long as the pressure of the flue
gas duct is not permanently below the ambient pressure.

3.3.1 Replacing the filter insert, part No. 5306091

CAUTION: Do not switch off the purge-air unit during maintenance!

‡ Check on the if the blower is running smoothly and quiet.

3.3.4 Checking the under-pressure monitor and differential pressure monitor (option)
‡ Check the under-pressure monitor on the purge-air unit filter to ensure that it works
properly.
‡ To do this activate the under-pressure monitor by holding the filter intake glands
shut for a short time.
‡ If installed, check the differential pressure monitor at the purge-air gland of the RM210
purge-air attachment.
‡ When the purge-air supply is interrupted for a short time, the differential pressure mon-
itor should be activated.
‡ Replace defective monitors.

Wait 30 s for the FSS to close fully.

WARNING: Shearing hazard!

The locking pipe for the fail-safe shutter (FSS) closes the measuring tubes by
means of a spring drive when no power is supplied. If objects or parts of the
body are located in the measurement apertures when the fail-safe shutter is
open or just partially closed, there is a risk of serious injury.
‡ Never reach into the measurement openings (see , page 19) even if you are
wearing gloves.
When opening the quick-release locks and the housing, be especially careful
and take the appropriate safety precautions in case the FSS is faulty and not
fully closed.

Preventive Maintenance

3.3.7 Checking for contamination after cleaning the optical surfaces

The optical boundary surfaces of the RM210 sender/receiver unit are the optical surfaces
which face the duct. They should be cleaned at regular intervals. How often they are
cleaned depends on the dust content of the ambient air and the plant conditions (experi-
ence has shown that this is usually anywhere between 8 and 26 weeks). You should also
clean the optical boundary surfaces after cleaning/replacing the filter insert in the purge-
air unit.
Determining the level of contamination
The optical boundary surfaces must be cleaned at the latest when the maximum permitted
level of contamination has been reached. The contamination limit can be set freely. The
standard limit value is 6%.
The current contamination level can be determined as follows:
● Analog signal during the reference cycle
The current contamination level (in %) can be determined using the display indication dur-
ing the reference cycle:
Display actual value [mA] – Display set value [mA]
Contamination = ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ∑ 100%
20 mA – Live zero [mA]

3.3.9 Check Functions of Control Cycle

Functions such as the check cycle and maintenance play a particularly important role in
the commissioning and operation of the RM210.
No error messages should be displayed while the individual functions are
being carried out. Once the check cycle is complete, the device should auto-
matically switch to measuring mode without an error message being displayed.

Check Cycle Function

The check cycle is an automatic system check. It can be triggered in one of five ways:
1 Periodically by the system itself, automatically in accordance with the set cycle interval
2 On the connection unit by pressing the "Check cycle" button
3 Remotely; buttons on terminals 18 and 19 with a jumper between terminals 20 and 21
4 Via the RCU-MS remote control unit
5 On a PC with MEPA RM210
Indication of control cycle results
The RM210 offers the following possibilities to indicate the control cycle results:
● on the display of the connection unit
● on a strip chart recorder
● using an amperemeter
