LC Comp 1000 Final Assignment Edited (1) Khushman

The letter discusses an article about the concept of 'critical ignoring' and how it can be useful to avoid negativity on social media. However, the author disagrees that critical ignoring should apply to harmful activities like misinformation, impersonation or scams. They believe attention should be given to flag such threats but otherwise, it is a good way to maintain mental well-being online.

Respected Steve Forbes,

I am writing this letter in response to the Feb 14, 2023 article "Is Critical Ignoring an Important Skill in
our Digital Age" by Tim Bajarin. I found the article very interesting as the topic in itself is quite relatable
and also introduced a new term to me "critical ignoring".

As the author opened the article by mentioning the term "critical thinking", a term that we all are aware
of, and how he has been using his skill more lately in the field he works in as well as in his daily life with
the ongoing advancement and popularity of social media. He states "This is a vital skill to apply when
looking at comments on social media, where so much is based on uneducated opinions, falsehoods, and
bot-driven misinformation.", and I completely agree that when it comes to social media platforms there
is more negativity than positivity as it is easy to hide behind screens and spread hatred. Reality is far
from what is shown on “Reel life”.

Here the author introduces a very interesting term "critical ignoring" which he came across in an article
he recently read, as stated in the article is defined by World Economic Forum as "the ability to choose
what to ignore and where to invest one's limited attentional capacities. Critical ignoring is more than just
not paying attention – it's about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information
overabundance." I completely agree with Bajarin on the fact that most people have to learn the skill of
critical ignoring to be a part of the digital community otherwise it will lead to one’s downfall. One should
be aware where to put his or her attention and what to just pass by as in it is invisible.

I believe nowadays we all unconsciously practice "critical ignoring" while scrolling through our
Instagram, we tend to just pass by random posts, comments and information without even bothering to
look at it because according to the author it is "suspicious and not worth any brainpower time". This skill
sure is good to avoid all the negativity and prioritize our own mental well-being as these days all there is
common trend to gain popularity on the basis of spreading misinformation, fake news, rumors, hate
comments etc., very few contents may actually have any truth or accuracy to them which is worth
putting our attention towards.

With the advancement of AI the process of scamming, catfishing, deep fakes etc. as stated in the article
- "could become a considerable problem for famous personalities and government officials who could be
deep faked to cause harm and mayhem in many ways.", adding up to "However, with critical ignoring
applied, much of what is seen on social media needs to be disregarded.", made me disagree with the
idea of critically ignoring such malpractices on social media because if we don't block, report or take any
other valid actions against these harmful activities they will continue to exist and spread negativity.
Ignoring could be useful and a peaceful option for non-serious, silly memes, false news or mean
comments but not for global level misinformation, impersonating, dangerous scams and frauds which
nowadays seem so real and are extremely misleading. According to me critical ignoring would not be the
best way to go about in this case but otherwise in our daily lives it is an excellent and appropriate way of
using social media and AI applications in order to maintain mental peace.

Not everything deserves our attention. Our brains and cognitive processes are too precious to be wasted
on useless and mostly inaccurate content on such platforms unless and until it's posing a threat to
somebody, in that case the required attention should be given to it and the needful action should be
taken. I would state a recent example to support my opinion. There was a recent news saying an Indian
actor passed away. Later on, the truth came to light that it was a pure publicity stunt by the actor’s PR
team. This sparked a huge rage in the media and the common people who were really upset about the
ways adopted by people to gain popularity. Now this news deserves our attention in order to
communicate to the world that there are better ways to attain popularity and not by faking it.

The above are my point of views and some additional points on the Feb 14, 2023 article "Is Critical
Ignoring an Important Skill in our Digital Age". I look forward to your opinion on the same.

Sincerely,

Khushman Saini
