The document analyzes an unknown salt through a series of tests to identify its constituent ions. Preliminary tests show it is white and does not contain certain metal ions. Sulfate ions are identified through a barium chloride test. Group analysis reveals the presence of ammonium ions through a Nessler's reagent test. The salt is concluded to contain ammonium and sulfate ions.

ANALYSIS OF SALT 4 ( Ammonium sulphate)
Aim : - TO ANALYSE THE GIVEN SALT FOR ACID RADICAL
(ANION) AND BASIC RADICAL (CATION) Materials required: Test tubes, test tube stand, test tube holder, filter paper, watch glass, glass rod, burner, tripod stand, wire gauze, beakers, nickel spatula, reagents . A) PRELIMINARY TESTS 1. Colour of the salt noted White absence of Cu 2+, Fe 2+, Fe 3+, Ni 2+, Co2+, Mn2+ ions 2. DRY HEATING TEST Absence of Ammonium salt A small amount of the salt is heated in a dry test tube. 3. FLAME TEST No characteristic Absence of Barium salt A little of the salt is made flame into a paste with Conc.HCl in a watch glass and shown to the non luminous part of Bunsen the flame using a glass rod. 4. COBALT NITRATE no characteristic Absence of zinc, magnesium, TEST/ASH TEST coloured ash aluminium ions To a little of the salt solution a few drops of conc. HNO3 and cobalt nitrate solution dip a filter paper into the solution and burnt into ashes B) IDENTIFICATION TEST FOR ANIONS 1. DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID no characteristic absence of carbonate TEST reaction A little of the salt is treated with 1 ml of dil. H2SO4 2. CONC. SULPHURIC ACID no characteristic Absence of nitrate, chloride TEST reaction and acetate a little of the salt is added with drops of conc. H2SO4 3. TEST FOR SULPHATE:- White precipitate Presence of sulphate BaCl2 test:- insoluble in conc. SO42- + BaCl2 → BaSO4 A little of the salt solution is added HCl (white ppt)+ 2Cl- with few drops of BaCl2 solution BaSO4 (white ppt) + conc. and conc. HCl is added to it HCl→no reaction C) GROUP ANALYSIS
Preparation of original solution:
A little of the salt is mixed well with water to get original solution in a test tube Sl.No EXPERIEMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE 1. salt + NaOH + heat Pungent Ammonia Presence of group 0 cation smelling gas gives ammonium NH4+ white fumes when On heating with NaOH glass rod dipped in ammonia gas is evolved conc.HCl is shown NH4+ + NaOH → Na+ + H2O + NH3(g)↑ HCl + NH3(g) → NH4Cl (white fumes) + H2O 2. OS + dil.HCl No characteristic Absence of group I cations reaction (Pb2+) 3. OS + dil. HCl + H2S gas No characteristic Absence of group II reaction cations (Cu2+) 4. OS+NH4Cl + NH4OH No characteristic Absence of group III reaction cation (Al 3+, Fe 3+) 5. OS+NH4Cl + NH4OH +H2S No characteristic Absence of group IV reaction cations (Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+ and Mn2+) 6. OS+NH4Cl+ NH4OH No characteristic Absence of group V +(NH4)2CO3 reaction cations (Sr2+, Ba2+, Ca2+) 7. OS+NH4Cl + NH4OH + No characteristic Absence of group VI Na2HPO4 reaction cations Mg2+
D) CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR CATIONS
Test for Ammonium: Reddish brown precipitate is Ammonium is confirmed To a little of the original obtained solution, Nessler’s reagent and sodium hydroxide are added
RESULT: The given simple salt contains 1.Anion: Sulphate 2.Cation: Ammonium
