Insulation Values
Insulation Values
• A measure of the ability of a material to transfer heat. Given two surfaces on either side of the
material with a temperature difference between them, the thermal conductivity is the heat energy
transferred per unit time and per unit surface area, divided by the temperature difference.
• Thermal conductivity is the time rate of steady state heat flow through a unit area of homogeneous
material induced by a unit temperature gradient in a direction perpendicular to that unit area.
• Unit is W/m.K
L – Thickness of the specimen (m).
T – Temperature (K)
q – Heat Flow Rate (W/m2)
• Thermal conductance is the time rate of steady state heat flow through a unit area of a material or
construction induced by a unit temperature between body surfaces.
• Unit is W/m2.K
• Thermal resistance is the temperature difference, at steady stage, between two defined surfaces
of a material or construction that induces a unit heat flow rate through a unit area.
• Unit is K.m2/W
R-value = 1 / C-value
R-Value = thickness / K-value
• Thermal transmittance is the rate of transfer of heat through matter. The thermal transmittance of
a material (such as insulation or concrete) or an assembly (such as a wall or window) is expressed
as a U-value
• Btu/(hr)(ft2)(°F)
• Unit is W/m2.K
