The net electric field strength at point A due to charge P and Q is 1.37 × 107 𝑁 𝐶 −1 with
direction 65.8° below the horizontal. Charge P is 5 𝜇𝐶 at the position as shown FIGURE
1.1. Charge Q is 8 cm from point A.

(i) With the help of electric field diagram, determine the magnitude and the type of
charge Q.

(ii) If the type of charge Q changes but its magnitude and position remain unchanged,
does the magnitude and direction of electric field change or remain the same.
State your answer.

FIGURE 1.2 shows two oppositely charged metal plate P and Q separated by 2 cm.
An electron is released from rest at plate P and reaches the speed of 5.13 × 106 𝑚 𝑠 −1
just before it strikes plate Q. Assume no gravitational force acts on the electron.

(i) Sketch the path of the electron motion between the plates.

(ii) Determine the electric force on the electron.

2 (a) A 1.5 𝜇𝐶 fully charged air-filled parallel plate capacitor has an area 2.5 𝑚2 and
plate separation of 3 mm. Calculate the charge on the capacitor 0.5 ms after being
connected in series to a 250 𝑘Ω resistor.

(b) A parallel plate capacitor with plate area 50 𝑐𝑚2 and plate separation 4 𝑚𝑚 is
charge by 100 V battery. A slab of mica with a dielectric constant 5.4 is inserted between
the plate of the capacitor. Calculate

(i) the new capacitance of capacitor.

(ii) the electric field strength between the plate.

FIGURE 3 shows four resistors 𝑅1 , 𝑅2 , 𝑅3 and 𝑅4 connected to a battery. A
voltmeter connected in parallel to resistor 𝑅3 shows a reading of 6 𝑉.
Determine the current 𝐼 drawn from the battery.

(b) A copper wire with resistivity 1.68 × 10−8 Ω 𝑚, length 12.5 m and diameter

2 cm is connected in series to a 5 V battery at 27℃. The temperature


coefficient of resistivity of copper is 6.8 × 10−3 ℃−1 .

(i) Calculate the resistance of the wire at 45℃.

(ii) If the wire is replaced by a longer identical copper wire, does the
current decrease, remain unchanged or increase? Explain your answer.

inductor, AC ammeter, 425 Ω resistor and a 3.50 𝜇F capacitor .
(i) Sketch a graph for the AC voltage against time. Label the peak voltage.
(ii) Calculate the impedance of the circuit.
(iii) Does the source voltage lag or lead the current? Justify your answer.
(iv) Calculate the average power dissipated in the circuit.
(v) Is this circuit in resonance? Justify your answer.
(vi) Sketch the phasor diagram for the circuit.

6 (a)

FIGURE 6.1

A thin hemispherical clear plastic bowl of radius 55 cm is placed in a tank filled


with water (nwater = 1.33). The base of the bowl sinks to a depth of 8 cm and the
water level rises to a height of 308 cm as shown in the FIGURE 6.1. An object at
the bottom of the tank is viewed vertically from above the bowl.

(i) calculate the image distance from the base of the bowl

(ii) Is the image virtual or real? Justify your answer.

(b) An object is placed 14 cm from a diverging lens of refractive index 1.5 and radii
of curvatures 4 cm and 7 cm respectively as shown in FIGURE 6.2

(i) Calculate the focal length of the diverging lens.

Determine the distance between the central bright and third dark fringe if the two
light sources are in phase.

(d) A 666 nm light illuminates a 2500 lines per cm diffraction grating. Thirteen
bright fringes are observed on the screen.

(i) Calculate the maximum diffraction angle of the bright fringe.

(ii) Does the separation between two consecutive bright fringes decreases,
remain unchanged or increase when a grating with a larger number of
lines per cm is used? Explain your answer.

7 An electron is accelerated through a potential difference of 2.5× 103 V.

(a) Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. [1 mark]

(b) If a proton has the same de Broglie wavelength as that of the electron, will the
momentum be smaller, equal or larger than that of the electron? Explain your
answer. [2 marks]

8 (a) The binding energy per nucleon iron (2656𝐹𝑒) is 8.46 MeV per nucleon.
Calculate the nuclide mass for iron.

(b) The half life of tritium is 12.33 years. If the initial activity of a tritium sample is
