ISC MOSTLIKELY PAPER 1

ISC 12

Maximum Marks: 70
Time Allowed: Three Hours
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time.)

This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.


Answer all questions.
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
Section C consists of nine questions of three marks each, and
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in two questions each in Section B,
Section C and Section D.
The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as and adjacent to the rest
of the answer.
Answers to sub parts of the same question must be given in one place only. A list of useful
physical constants is given at the end of this paper.
A simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for calculations.

Section A – 14 Marks

(i) Distinguish between polar and non-polar dielectrics.

(ii) At which path, a charge particle moves in a uniform magnetic field when it enters into the

(iii) What is the formula used for finding refractive index of a prism when its angle of minimum
deviation is given?

(iv) The current versus potential difference curve for an ohmic material is shown in the figure
below. What is represented by the slope of this graph?

(v) A metallic plug AB is carrying a current I (see figure below). State how the drift velocity of
free electrons varies from end A to end B.

(vi) An electric lamp is connected in series with a capacitor and an AC source is glowing with a
certain brightness. How does the brightness of the lamp change on increasing the
capacitance?

(vii) In Fraunhofer's single slit diffraction experiment, how does semi-angular width θ of the
central bright fringe depend on slit width a?

(i) A solenoid of length 0.5 m has a radius of 1 cm and is made up of 500 turns. It carries a
current of 5 A. What is the magnitude of magnetic field inside the solenoid?

(i) Equal currents are flowing through two infinitely long parallel wires in the same direction.
What will be the magnetic field at a point mid-way between the two wires?

(i) An object of size 3.0 cm is placed at 14 cm from concave lens of focal length 21 cm.
Describe the image produced by the lens.
(ii) What happens, if the object is moved further away from the lens?

Question 4 [2]

A series L-C-R circuit is connected to a variable frequency (AC) of 220 V supply. If L = 20 mH, C =
(800/π²) µF and R = 110 Ω,
(i) find the frequency of the source, for which average power absorbed by the circuit is
maximum.
(ii) calculate current in this situation.

Identify the electromagnetic waves whose wavelengths vary as


(i) 10-12 m < λ < 10-8 m
(ii) 10-3 m < λ < 10-1 m

Question 6 [2]

A compound microscope consists of two convex lenses of focal lengths 1.5 cm and 4 cm. When an
object is kept at a distance of 3 cm from the objective, a virtual and magnified image is formed 24 cm
from eyepiece. Calculate the magnifying power of microscope.

Question 7 [2]

(i) Calculate the disintegration energy Q when a heavy nucleus, A = 240 with binding
energy/nucleon -7.6 MeV splits into two equal fragments of mass number A' = 120 each,
with BE/nucleon = 8.5 MeV.

(ii) Suppose, we think of fission of a %$ #'
#$𝐹𝑒 nucleus into two equal fragments of &"𝐴𝑙 . Is the
fission energetically possible? Argue by working out Q of the process. Given, m( %$

Out of the two magnetic materials, A has relative permeability slightly greater than unity while B has
less than unity. Identify the nature of the materials A and B. Will their susceptibilities be positive or
negative?
SECTION C – 27 MARKS

Question 9 [3]

An electric dipole of dipole moment p is placed in a uniform electric field E with its axis inclined to
the field. Write an expression for the torque t experienced by the dipole in vector form. Show
diagramatically, how the dipole should be kept in the electric field, so that the torque acting on it is
(i) maximum
(ii) zero

Question 10 [3]

(i) (a) Define Kirchhoff's voltage rule.


(b) Find the currents I1, I2 and I3 in the circuit shown in figure using Kirchhoff's rule.

OR

(ii) What do you mean by the sensitivity of a Wheatstone bridge? On what factor, does it
depend? Give an advantage of null point method in this bridge.

Question 11 [3]

(i) What are the conditions for constructive and destructive interferences? Give resultant
intensity in each case.
OR

(ii) A convex lens of focal length 20 cm is placed 15 cm apart coaxially from a convex mirror
of focal length 10 cm. A point object O is placed at a distance of 50 cm in front of convex
lens. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image by the combination and also
determine the nature and position of image formed.

(i) When a forward bias is applied to a p-n junction, what happens to its potential barrier across
the junction?
(ii) Assuming that the two diodes D1 and D2 used in the electric circuit as shown in the figure
are ideal, find out the value of the current flowing through 1Ω resistor

Question 13 [3]

(i) What is the condition for first minima in case of diffraction due to a single slit?
(ii) In deriving the single slit diffraction pattern, it was stated that the intensity is zero at angles

Question 14 [3]

A student performs an experiment on photoelectric effect, using two materials A and B. A plot of Vstop
versus v is given in the figure.

(i) Which material A or B has a higher work function?


(ii) Given the electric charge of an electron = 16 × 10-19°C, find the value of h obtained
from the experiment for both A and B.
Comment on whether it is consistent with the Einstein's theory.

Using Rutherford model of the atom, derive the expression for the total energy of the electron in
hydrogen atom. What is the significance of total negative energy possessed ts the electron?

Question 16 [3]

Draw a plot of potential energy between a pair of nucleons as a function of their separation. Mark the
regions, where potential energy is
(a) positive and
(b) negative.

Question 17 [3]

An experiment on LED was performed by a student the examiner gives the following instructions to
the student. State whether the responses of the student in each case are Correct or incorrect. Give your
reason.
(i) EXAMINER The brightness of the LED light is too low. Increase the brightness.
STUDENT Increases the voltage applied to the LED.
(ii) EXAMINER The color emitted by the LED is not the desired colour. Change it to blue
STUDENT Replaces the LED with a blue LED.
(iii) EXAMINER Compare the brightness of LED when it is connected in series with resistance
versus connected in parallel with resistor.
STUDENT Measures the brightness in both cases and states that the brightness is high in
the parallel.

SECTION D – 15 MARKS

Question 18 [5]

(i) (a) Explain the meaning of the term mutual inductance. Consider two concentric circular
coils, one of the radii r1 and the other of radius r₂ (r₁ < r₂) placed coaxially with centres
coinciding with each other. Obtain the expression for the mutual inductance of the
arrangement.
(b) A rectangular coil of an area A, having number of turns N is rotated at f revolutions per
second in a uniform magnetic field B, the field being perpendicular to the coil. Prove that
the maximum emf induced in the coil is 2πfΝΒΑ.

OR
(ii) State the principle of an AC generator and explain its working with the help of a labelled
diagram. Obtain the expression for the emf induced in a coil having N turns each of cross-
sectional area A, rotating with a constant angular speed 𝜔 in a magnetic field (B), directed
perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

(i) (a) Deduce the expression for the energy density stored in a charged capacitor.
(b) Show that the effective capacitance C of a series combination of three capacitors C1, C2
and C3, is given by

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

Young's Experiment
In 1801, Thomas Young was the first who demonstrated the interference of light.
In his experimental arrangement (as shown in figure monochromatic light (single wavelength) from a
narrow vertical slit S falls on two other narrow slits S1 and S2 which are very close together and
equidistant to S. S1 and S2 act as two coherent sources (both being derived from S). The emerging
beams spread into the region beyond the slits. Superposition occurs in the shaded area, where the
beams overlap. Alternate bright and dark equally spaced vertical bands interference fringes) can be
observed on a screen placed at same distance from the slits. If either of S1 or S2 is covered, then the
fringes disappear.
(i) Suppose while performing double slit experiment, the space between the slits and the screen
is filled with water. How does the interference pattern change?

(ii) (a) In Young's double slit experiment, if the distance between the slits is halved, what
changes in the fringe width will take place?
(b) What is the effect on the interference fringes, if the separation between the two slits is
increased?

(iii) The ratio of the widths of two slits in Young's double slit experiment is 4:1.
Evaluate the ratio
(a) amplitudes in the interference pattern.
(b) maximum to minimum intensities in interference pattern.
