n Evaluation of Algebraic Expressions

1

Evaluating algebraic expressions, means to find the value of the expression when the
variable is replaced by a given number. To substitute each variable’s value into the expression
substituting a number in for a variable, by putting it in a parenthesis will be easier to correctly
simplify expression using the order of operations. In this lesson, we will learn related terms in
algebraic expressions. Mastery of these concepts in fundamental to learn algebra.

What’s In

Recall that a numerical or an arithmetic expression is any symbol for a number.

We are familiar with the arithmetic statement 2 + 3 =5.

There are times, however, when expressions have missing terms which are represented by a
blank (__), a circle [ ], a box [ ], or simply by x or y like

+ =5
x + y=5

In the last expression, x and y may take values from the set of integers that make the statement
true. For example:
5+0=5 2+3=5 -1 + 6 = 5 -4 + 9 = 5
4+1=5 1+4=5 -2 + 7 = 5 -5 + 10 = 5
3+2=5 0+5=5 -3 + 8 = 5 -6 + 11 = 5
There is an infinite number of values that can take the places for x and y. These letters are called
variables and the number 5, which remains unchanged, is called constant.

What’s New

To recognize the thought, let us do the following activity:

Assume that a number is assigned to a letter of the alphabet as follows:
A= 1 B= 2 C= 3 D= 4 E= 5 and so on up to Z= 26.
Utilizing the number above, find the value of a name by adding the value of its digits.

For example: NUR= 14+ 21+ 18= 53

NICO= 14+ 9+ 3+ 15= 41
Try This!

A. Find the numerical value of each name:

1. JOHN REY

2. J- ANN

3. Find the value of the name FATIMA. Compare it with the value of your name. Are there two
names with the same value?

B. Determine the value of the whole expression.

Follow the examples:

Substitute the given
value of the variable

a. What is the value of x + 10 if x= 20?

x+ 10= 20+ 10
= 30
b. What is the value of x 2-5 if x= 3
2 2
x −5=3 −5
= ( 3 )2- 5

= 9- 5
=4
x+ 4
c. Evaluate if x= 2 and y= 5
y−1
x+ 4 2+ 4 6
= =
y−1 5−1 4
3
=2
d. What is the value of x 4 +2 x+ 1 if x= 5
4 4
x +2 x+ 1=( 5 ) + 2 ( 5 )+1
625+ 10+ 1= 636

Try This!

1. What is the value of x+ 10 if x= 5 ________________

2. What is the value of x- 15 if x= 10 _______________
3. Find the value of 5 x 2+3 if x= 5 ________________

4. Find the value of x 4 −5 x−2 if x= 4 _______________

4 x+ 2
5. Evaluate if x= 2, y= 4 ______________
10 y−3

Great! You were able to answer the activity.

Let us now define related terms and new to evaluate algebraic expressions.

What is it?

Algebra
An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain numbers, variables, and
mathematical operations. It represents a value or relationship.

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi is the most

prominent and most important a 9th-century Muslim
mathematician and astronomer. He is known as the
“father of algebra”, a word derived from the title of his
book, Kitab al-Jabr.

Order of Operations
The order of operations specifies the order in which to per- form each of multiple operations in
an expression or equation.
PEMDAS is an acronym used to mention the order of operations to be followed while solving
expressions having multiple operations. PEMDAS stands for P- Parentheses, E- Exponents, M-
Multiplication, D- Division, A- Addition, and S- Subtraction. By following these steps, you can
simplify and accurately solve mathematical expressions.

Multiplication in Algebraic Expression

In algebraic expression, multiplication can be done in three ways.

A. Writing the factors side by side.

The expression can be written as 5mn
Examples: 3ab if a= 10, and b= 2
Substitute the value of each variables and simplify, we obtain
Solution:
= 3ab
= 3 (10) (2)
= 3 (20)
= 60
B. Using dots between factors
The expression can be written as 2a•c
Example: 9x•y if x= 3, and y= 7

Replace the variables of each value, following the PEMDAS method and simplify
Solution:
= 9x• y
= 9 (3) • (7)
= 27 • 7
= 189

C. Using parentheses to separate factors

The expression can be written as 4(x + y)

Example: 2(x + y) if x= 10, and y=3

Substitute the value of each variable, following the PEMDAS method and simplify
Solution:
= 2(x + y)
= 2 (10 + 3)
= 2 (13)
= 26
