Bridge Watch Monitoring System

Doc.no.: AD-0075-C/23-Sept-97 1

1. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the Bridge Watch Monitoring System is to detect irregularities in bridge
operation caused by operator disability, and alert another qualified navigator if the
bridge is unattended and if danger to navigation occurs.

The system meets the requirements set by IMO and classification societies for "one-
man bridge operation".

System design is based on standard modules and software, adaptable to all types of
ships.

The Bridge Watch Monitoring System consists of:

An interval checking system that requires manual acknowledgment within pre-set

intervals and therefore detects if the watch officer is not in position.

A navigation warning and alarm system that transfers operational warnings from
grounding and collision avoidance system as well as instrument malfunction alarms to a
central alarm panel, and further to the Captain's Quarter, public areas and the cabin of a
back-up navigator, if appointed.

4. FUNCTION

4.1. Interval Checking System

The system is designed to activate a warning light followed by a buzzer at pre-set
interval.

If a warning is not acknowledged within 30 seconds, the alarm is transferred to public

areas, Captain's Quarter and back-up navigator, if appointed.

The buzzer in Captain's Quarter, public room and navigator's cabin is activated until
"reset" is pressed on bridge panel, bridge wing panel or external reset.

The selected interval period is automatically reset to zero, when control on the
DataBridge 2000 is operated.

4.2. Navigation Warning and Alarm System

The system is designed for receiving up to 15 external alarm signals from
miscellaneous bridge equipment.

If the alarm is not acknowledged by the navigator, the alarm is transferred to Captain's
Quarter, public room, and back-up navigator, if appointed.

The buzzer in Captain's Quarter, public rooms and navigator's cabin is activated until
"reset" is pressed on bridge panel or bridge wing panel.

5. POWER-UP

5.1. Interval Checking System

The system is to be switched on/off, at "WTU" in Captain's Quarter.

When the system is powered-up, the timer (t1) in "Watch Timer Unit" (WTU) is
automatically pre-set to 12 min.

The timer (t1) is adjustable from 1 - 12 min. (See Chapter 7, "Change of Time").

The selection of back-up navigator can be changed to any navigator by pressing the
relevant button on bridge panel.

The activated button will be illuminated, indicating which navigator has been selected
as back-up.

It is possible to select more than one (1) navigator as back-up.

5.2. Navigation Warning and Alarm System

Transfer of navigation equipment alarms from the central alarm panel on the bridge to
Captain's Quarter, public rooms and back-up navigator (if appointed) will be executed
when the "WTU" in Captain's Quarter is activated.
