Introduction
In the Aurora National High School, the mental well-being of its students shows as a
major source of concern. Within this dynamic educational atmosphere, the impacts of poor
self-esteem on students' mental states deserve further investigation. Self-esteem is defined as
one's subjective opinion of personal worth and potential, and it has a significant impact on an
individual's ideas, feelings, and behaviors. Also the study on the Effects of Low Self-esteem
on the Mental State of Students at Aurora National High School seeks to identify the complex
factors that represent such an issue within the school's particular situation.
In this changing environment, the increasing rate of low self-esteem presents a huge
challenge, affecting students' academic achievement, social interactions, and emotional
stability. By putting into focus details of this phenomenon, the study hopes to provide
educators, parents, and policymakers with useful insights into effective interventions and
support mechanisms specific to the requirements of Aurora National High School's student
population. Through a comprehensive assessment of real-world facts, qualitative insights, and
psychological frameworks, the study seeks to understand the root causes and consequences of
low self-esteem, ultimately leading the way for the development of a school environment.
Statement of the Problem
This mini-research examines the impact of low self-esteem on the mental well-being
of grade 10 students at Aurora National High School. Specifically, this study aims to address
the following questions:
1 .What are the effects of a low Self -Esteem to the mental state of a student?
2. What are the possible solution to boost the self confidence of the student?
3. How might a low self esteem be expressed by the student in a school?
4. What are the effects of a low Self -Esteem to the mental state of a student?
Definition of Terms:
Negative Self-Perception:
Students with low self-esteem often struggle to effectively manage challenges and
setbacks. They may be inclined to give up when faced with adversity due to a lack of
confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles.
Social Withdrawal:
Low self-esteem can lead to social withdrawal and isolation, as students may avoid
social interactions out of fear of rejection or judgment. This isolation can intensify feelings of
loneliness and depression.
Self-Esteem:
Self-esteem encompasses the extent to which students feel satisfied with themselves
and perceive themselves as valuable and worthy of respect. It involves believing in one’s
capabilities to learn, achieve, and contribute to the world independently.
Additionally, perceived competence refers to the belief in one’s skills in a specific
area. Typically, individuals with low self-esteem are highly self-critical, minimize or
disregard their positive qualities, judge themselves as inferior to their peers, and use negative
descriptors such as “fat,” “ugly,” or “unlovable.”
Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant effect of low self-esteem on the mental state of
students in Aurora National High School.
Alternative Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant effect of low self-esteem on the mental
state of students in Aurora National High School.
II. Body
Background of Study
The background of the study for "Effects of Low Self-esteem on the Mental State of
Students at Aurora National High School" contextualizes the significance of mental well-
being among students within the specific educational environment of Aurora National High
School. It underscores the importance of understanding how low self-esteem impacts
students' thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, given its potential implications for academic
performance, social relationships, and emotional stability.
Also the study aims to investigate the complex factors contributing to low self-esteem
within the school setting, recognizing the challenges teenagers face in navigating their
educational and personal development. By focusing on this phenomenon, the study seeks to
provide insights that can inform interventions and support mechanisms tailored to the needs
of Aurora National High School's student population.

i. Slovin’s formula
In statistics, the Slovin’s formula is used to calculate and get the simple size (n)
necessary for the study with the population size (N) and a margin of error (e) being given. In
our study, our population are grade 8 students. In order to get the sample size of population,
the researchers used the Slovin’s formula.
N
n= 2
1+ ( N ) (e)
where:
n= sample size
N= size of the population
e= margin of error (0.05)

1. Sampling Method
For this study, investigating the effect of low self-esteem on the mental state
of grade 8 students at Aurora National High School, a convenience sampling
technique combined with a survey questionnaire will be employed. In this approach,
the researchers will distribute the survey questionnaire to all grade 8 students within
the school.
Through this method, every grade 8 student will have the opportunity to
participate in the study. The survey questionnaire will be made easily accessible to
students, either in physical form distributed within classrooms or digitally through
online platforms, ensuring convenience and flexibility in completion.
Additionally, friendly reminders and encouragement will be provided to
students who have not yet completed the survey, emphasizing the importance of their
input in contributing to the understanding of the topic. By adopting this humanized
approach, the researchers aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that
encourages active participation from all grade 8 students, ultimately facilitating a
comprehensive exploration of the relationship between low self-esteem and mental
well-being within the school community.
