-What is TESDA, Short term courses, Vocational Training and Manpower
Resources Development, Role of Vocational Training to National
Development.

Non-formal education is education that is institutionalized, intentional and planned by an


education provider. The defining characteristic of non-formal education is that it is an addition,
alternative and/or complement to formal education within the process of lifelong learning of
individuals.
A non-formal training program is a structured learning experience that does not follow the
traditional formal education system.
Non-formal training programs are typically hands-on and experiential, focusing on practical
application rather than theoretical knowledge.
Non-formal trainings in the Philippines includes:
1. TESDA
2. Livelihood Skills Training program
3. Alternative Learning System

1.1 Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Programs: TESDA offers a
wide range of non-formal training programs in various vocational skills such as automotive
repair, culinary arts, welding, and computer programming.

2.2 Livelihood Skills Training Programs: Many local government units and non-profit
organizations in the Philippines offer non-formal training programs focused on livelihood skills
such as handicraft making, food processing, and entrepreneurship.

3.3 ALS, is a ladderized , modular non-formal education program in the Philippines for dropout
in elementary or secondary schools, out of school youth, working Filipino and senior citizen.
These are just a few examples of the diverse non-formal training programs available in the
Philippines to cater to the needs and interests of different individuals seeking to acquire new
skills and knowledge outside of the formal education system.
Technical Education and Skills Development Authority

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is a government


agency in the Philippines that is responsible for overseeing and managing the country's
technical-vocational education and training (TVET) programs. TESDA plays a crucial
role in promoting and enhancing the skills development of the Filipino workforce to meet
the demands of the local and global job market.

TESDA formulates manpower and skills plans, sets appropriate skills standards and
tests, coordinates and monitors manpower policies and programs, and provides policy
directions and guidelines for resource allocation for the TVET institutions in both the
private and public sectors.
Short courses offered in TESDA
Short courses are special training program designed to further enhance knowledge and skills of
learners and prepare them to pass the national certification examination.
Here are top 10 common courses offered in TESDA
1. The Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II Qualification consists of competencies
that a person must achieve to weld carbon steel plate and pipe components as specified
by layout, blueprints, diagrams, work order, welding procedure or oral instructions using
shielded metal arc welding equipment.
2. COOKERY NC II Qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to
clean kitchen areas, prepare hot, cold meals and desserts for guests in various food and
beverage service facilities.
3. FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICES NC II Qualification consists of competencies that a
person must achieve to provide food and beverage service to guests in various food and
beverage service facilities.
4. Bread and Pastry Production NC II (also known as Baking and Pastry Production NC II)
is a technical-vocational program that develops the skills of students in preparing and
producing bakery/pastry products, cakes and desserts.
5. HOUSEKEEPING NC II Qualification consists of competencies that a person must
achieve to prepare guest rooms, clean public areas and equipment, provide
housekeeping services, provide valet services, handle intoxicated guest, and laundry
linen and guest clothes to a range of accommodation services.
6. Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II Qualification consists of competencies that
a person must achieve to enable him/her to install and maintain electrical wiring, lighting
and related equipment and systems where the voltage does not exceed 600 volts in
residential houses/buildings.
7. Computer Systems Servicing NC II program provided by TESDA. This program is
designed to develop competencies in setting up computer networks, configuring
computer systems, and performing routine maintenance tasks to ensure seamless
operations.
8. BOOKKEEPING NC III Qualification consists of competencies that a person must
achieve to enable him/her to journalize transactions, post transactions, prepare trial
balance, prepare financial reports and review internal control system.
9. SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW) NC I This includes common competencies;
apply safety practices, interpret drawing and sketches, perform industry calculations,
contribute to quality system, use hand tools, prepare weld materials, setup welding
equipment, fit up weld materials and repair welds.
10. Contact Center Services NC II is a certification program from TESDA that prepares
individuals for working in the customer service industry. This qualification helps those
interested in the field to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become
successful.
Vocational Technical Training and Manpower Resources Development
Vocational technical training focuses on providing practical, hands-on education in specific
trades or professions, preparing individuals for careers in various industries.
Manpower resources development, on the other hand, involves the strategic planning and
management of human resources to ensure that the workforce is skilled, competent, and
adaptable to meet the demands of the labor market.
The Role of Vocational Education in National Development
Vocational education, also known as technical education, trade school, or skilled labor training,
plays a crucial role in national development. It helps to prepare individuals for the job market
and provides society with a skilled workforce, leading to economic growth and development,
improved productivity, and reduced unemployment.
