What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you understand the phases of the moon. The scope of this module permits it to be
used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course.
After going through this module, you are expected to infer the pattern in
changes in the appearance of the moon. S5FE-IVg-h-7
Specifically, you are expected to make a puzzle that shows the phases of the
Moon.
What I Know
Read the questions carefully and encircle the letter of the correct answer.

have different shapes?
A. Asteroid B. Comet C. Stars D. Sun
2. How long will it take the Moon to complete one phase, from New Moon phase
to the next New Moon phase?
A. 29 days B. 29 ½ days C. 30 days D. 30 ½ days

4. The Moon appears different every night. Which of the following statement is
NOT true?
A. The Moon have light of its own.

Lesson PHASES OF THE MOON
What’s In
Rearrange the letters below to form words that refer to the movement
of heavenly bodies.
R ___ V ___ L ___ T ___ ___ ___ - movement of a heavenly body on its own axis as
it orbits around another heavenly body
___ O ___ ___ T ___ ___ N - movement of heavenly body on its own axis
The moon has four shapes. Can you recall the different shapes of the moon
as seen in the universe?
Look at the pictures of the basic shapes of the moon. Identify each shape as
shown in each picture. Choose the correct answer from the words inside the
box below. Write your answers on the space provided.
What’s New

Complete the table. Choose the correct answer from the box. Refer to the diagram
above to answer the table below.
WAXING WANING
1. waxing means __________________ waning means shrinking
getting bright from the right side 2. getting bright from the ________ side
3. shape ________________ shape decrease
4. from new moon to _______________ 5. from full moon to _________________
What Is It
What causes the moon to change its appearance and position in the sky?
The moon appears different every night
but it actually does not change its shape.
It is because, the moon rotates on its axis as it
revolves around the earth. And together the
moon and the earth rotate around its own axis
as they revolve around the sun. The moon does
not have its own light. Instead, the sunlight
reflects light in the moon in different angles
which give different shape as seen in the
universe. This is known as the phases of the moon.

What’s More
Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the moon by re-arranging the
pictures from the first phase to the last phase. Use letters A-H (“A” for the first
phase up to “H” the last phase). Write your answers on the answer sheet provided.
What I Can Do
Get out or stay near the window at 8:00-9:00PM. Look at the sky and
