Pattern in the Changes in the
Appearance of the Moon

Target
The moon is the only natural satellite that Earth has. It does not
produce its own light. It only reflects the light coming from the sun. since
the moon is revolving around the sun, the amount of sunlight it reflects
from the sun varies as it changes its position. The moon’s appearance
changes from time to time.
In this module, you will be learning about phases of the moon
and its changes in appearance.
MELC: Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the moon

Phases of the Moon
The most obvious pattern of the moon are the phases of the moon,
which move in a month-long cycle. Because the moon reflects its light from
the sun, only the part of the moon that faces the sun is visible. As the moon
revolves around the Earth, its shadow covers part of its surface.
The moon has eight phases. These are the new moon, waxing
crescent moon, first quarter moon, waxing gibbous moon, full moon, waning
gibbous moon, last quarter moon, waning crescent moon. It takes about one
week for the moon to change from one phase to another.
5
1. New moon- when the moo is between the sun and the Earth. During
this phase, the moon is not visible from the Earth. This is because the
side of the moon that is facing the Earth is not being lit by the sun.
3. First quarter moon- half of the moon is illuminated. The first quarter
occurs about a week after the new moon and before the full moon.
4. Waxing gibbous moon- the moon is in between the first quarter moon
and full moon. The gibbous moon is more than half-lighted. More than
half of the moob is visible.
5. Full moon- whole lighted side of the moon. This occurs a week after
the first quarter moon. It appears as an entire circle in the night sky.
Last quarter moon- appears on the third week of the month. Again, we
see a half of the moon’s lighted part.
6. Waning gibbous moon- the moon is in between the last quarter moon
and full moon. The gibbous moon is more than half-lighted. More than
half of the moob is visible.
7. Last quarter moon- half of the moon is illuminated. The last quarter
moon occurs on the third week of the month before the new moon will
appear.
The moon goes through these eight phases in 29 and ½ days. The
period it takes the moon to complete is called month.
