Antibiotic is very effective in killing bacteria.

(a) State one problem statement from the above information. (1mark)
(b) Suggest one hypothesis to investigate the above statement. (1mark)

(c) Based on the given statement, design a laboratory experiment to test your hypothesis
by using Bacillus sp. culture solution, sterile nutrient agar, an antibiotic disc, two sterile
petri dishes, forceps, cellophane tape and beaker.
Your description should include the following criteria:
(i) Aim of experiment (1 mark)
(ii) Identification of variables (2marks)
(iii)Procedure or method (4 marks)

1. Apparatus is set up as shown above is prepared.

2. 1 cm² of Bacillus sp. Culture solution is poured on top of sterile nutrient agar in two
Petri dishes and labelled as A and B.
3. Antibiotic disc is placed in the middle of Petri dish A while Period dish B is left without
the antibiotic disc.
4. Both dishes are closed with lids and sealed with cellophane tape. Then both dishes are
flipped over and kept in a dark cupboard at room temperature for two days.
5. The growth of bacteria in both dishes is observed and the result is recorded in a table.

B (without antibiotic disc)
9a. The use of quality breeds in Malaysia can diversify food sources, increase food quality and
quantity of national food production.

(i) State two characteristics of quality breeds. (2 marks)

(ii) Diagram 6 showsexamples of quality breeds from crop fields.

Table 5

Compare and contrast the characteristic of paddy P and paddy Q. The corect selection of
paddy breed will increase the income of farmers. Based on the information in Table 5,
explain how this paddy breed selection can increase their income. (4 marks)

(c) Biological control is a method which applies the interaction between organisms in order
to control crop pests.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using this method. (4 marks)
9 (ai) -rapid growth and maturing
-resistance to disease, pest and extreme weather
- easier and less cost to care for
- high yiclds
-higher quality (accept any 2 answers)

(ii) -Cloning
-cross-brceding
- genetic engineering
-genetic mutation technology (accept any 2 answers)

(b) Similarity Both have high resistance to weather changes (1 m)

Differences: Paddy Pmatures faster than paddy Q.

Paddy P is less resistant to disease than paddy Q.
The mass of 1000 grains for paddy Pis lower than paddy Q.
Stem of paddy P break more easily than paddy Q. (1m)

(Accept any 1answer )

Explanation of paddy breed selection can increase yield by choosing paddy breeds that:
Short maturity period
Resistant to disease.
High yield
Quality harvest (2m)
Stems that do not break easily. (Accept any 2 answers )

(c)
Advantages of biological control Disadvantages of biological control
-more environmental-friendly -takes a longer time to control the
population of crop pests
-Does not harm the health of other -difficult to predict the results of biological
organisms except crop pests control which involves living organisms
-Does not cause crop pests to become -need more detailed and effective planning
resistant and management
-cheaper -disrupts the balance of ecosystem if
populations of the predator species or
parasite becomeuncontrollable
