INSTRUCTIONS
This paper consists of three examination items. It has two sections;A and B.
Answer all the items in both sections.
Use of illustrations and drawings will earn you more scores.
SECTION A
Attempt all the items in this section
Item 1
In chemistry, chemical experiments require a special room for carrying them out,
although some experiments may be done outside in an open place. This place is called
a laboratory.
its however important that at most caution is taken while in the laboratory to ensure
safety for everyone carrying out the experiment.
The figure below shows unsafe behaviour from learners in a chemistry laboratory.
Study it and answer the questions that follow.
a) Identify any three (3) unsafe behaviours exhibited by the students in the figure
above. (6 scores)

c) Assuming you were invited to this class to talk to the students about laboratory
safety. Write a simple message you would give them to ensure they stay safe while in

Item 2
Chemistry is one of the most prestigious subjects studied at secondary level of
education. When you study chemistry, you not only acquire knowledge about many
chemical reactions and other substances, but you can also take up various careers after
schooling.
a) Suggest any four (4) carriers that you can take up through studying chemistry.

SECTION B
Answer all the items in this section.
Item 3
You are a chemistry teacher conducting a laboratory session to demonstrate the safe
and effective use of the Bunsen burner, a heating apparatus.
Task
a) Explain the structure and working principle of the Bunsen burner, include the
different parts of the burner and how it regulates the flow of the gas and air to achieve
different types of flames. (4 scores)
b) Outline the safety precautions and guidelines that students should follow when
using the Bunsen burner, including lighting and extinguishing the flame. (10 scores)
c) Describe the different types of flames produced by the Bunsen burner and explain
the appropriate applications of each type of flame in the laboratory work. (6 scores)
