6P For SOP
6P For SOP
A Statement of Purpose is a connection between your past experiences and the future you want
to build with your intended program, at your intended school/organization. SOP is mainly about
the program and how you fit into it.
2. Past Experience
Note that it is important to share vivid, concrete examples of work you have done. E.g. you may
have written a paper, made a presentation or worked with a mentor.
If you're applying to a different country, why do you want to study in that country?
Why do you want to study in that particular school?
How does your work connect with the program?
How does the program fulfill your needs and interest?
What are your expectations from the program?
How are you going to contribute to the program?
Does the program have a particular research methodology that you like?
Is there any particular professor you would like to work with? You can contact the
professor and ask him to endorse your SOP.
Note that you must use the right words to show that you've done research on the
school/organization, and are willing to join them. Your research shows them that you're
genuinely interested in the program and you're ready to work hard to get in.
4. Personality
Apart from your work and education, what is it about you that make you unique?
What are those one or two things about your personality that you want to showcase to the
admissions officer?
What do you know about the student body? And how do you think you are going to fit
in? This is a way of connecting your personality to the personality of the college.
Note that the key to writing a good SOP is being unique and remaining on the mind of the officer
after he must have read it. You can begin with a quote, an anecdote, or an experience in your
personal life that connects directly with the program you want to pursue.
5. Plain English
You need to communicate clearly, effectively, and logically. Make it simple and easy to
read.
Write it yourself.
Give yourself time, write it slowly.
6. Process: if you get the process right, there is a very high chance that the end result will be
perfect.
