Safety requirements and personnel qualification
All the activities on installation, mounting, dismantling, operation and
maintenance of a Variable Speed Drive must be carried out in conformity
with effective local and electrical codes and regulations. Improper
installation and operation of the drive may result in personal injury or
equipment damage. There is a deadly level of voltage in drive’s cabinet.
When working on installation, maintenance, repair, it is vital to monitor the
absence of voltage at the input and output terminals of VSD.
Before start working with VSD the staff must:
• be specially trained and examined in labor protection issues;
• attend a preliminary medical examination (when hired for work) and
periodic health examinations (during the entire labor activity);
• have electrical safety qualification.
At conducting connection to the power supply line there a special attention
must be paid to ensuring of reliable grounding of VSD casing. Grounding
resistance must meet the local and national requirements.
At executing any work inside Variable Speed Drive the following safety
measures must be performed:
• circuit breaker ON/OFF
must be placed to “OFF”
position;
• leading-in cables must be
de-energized;
• warning tags must be put
ON;
• make sure that leading-in
cables are de-energized
and ground them.
* – circuit breaker handle may change place in different VSD’s types.

8 EVERYTHING NEW EMERGES NOW

ATTENTION! Filter power capacitors conserve the charge
hazardous to life within 5 minutes after de-energization! Prior
to execution of work inside the cabinet make sure that
capacitors are de-energized. Filter power capacitors conserve
the charge hazardous to life within 5 minutes after de-
energization!
ATTENTION! It is prohibited to disconnect and connect
detachable joints if supply voltage is available. Electronic
control units of Variable Speed Drives contain components
made on the basis of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)
technology excluding the action of static electricity. If you
need to touch some MOS component, ground your body and
the tools to be used.
Safety Recommendation
The drive should be installed, adjusted and serviced by qualified electrical
maintenance personnel. Improper installation or operation of the drive may
cause injury to personnel or damage to equipment. The drive must be
installed and grounded in accordance with local and national electrical
codes. There is a deadly level of voltage in drive’s cabinet. Extreme care
must be taken to ensure all power sources are disconnected before starting
installation, maintenance and repair jobs. Whenever a drive containing a
SCADA or telemetry connection is to be repaired or serviced, the service
man must disconnect any communication devices attached to the drive to
prevent unexpected start commands from the remote control system.
Service men must be aware that there could be more than one remote
telemetry connection and that all of them must be disabled or disconnected
for the duration of the repair period. Once repairs are completed, the
telemetry connections should be reestablished.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The basic personal protection equipment (PPE) required for field service
includes, but is not limited to, steel toe shoes, safety glasses and a hard hat.
If electrical configuration or maintenance is performed on potentially
energized circuits, personal protective equipment is required to minimize
the danger or electrical shock, arc flash and/or arc blast. The level of PPE
required can vary based upon the available electrical energy available at the
installation site. If any doubt exists, consult and employ the
recommendations published in the National Fire Protection Code, NFPA-70E.

www.triolcorp.com 9
Safety Procedures
Work inside the cabinets should be performed with the power off. Isolate
energy source(s) and use proper Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure personnel safety. The drive
also contains stored sources of energy in the form of capacitors. Allow
sufficient time after power is removed for those capacitors to discharge to a
safe level below 50 V DC. The bleed resistors attached to the capacitors will
reduce the voltage to safe levels within five minutes of power down. Confirm
removal of energy source using a proven voltage indicator device.

Variable Speed Drive operation mode
Variable Speed Drive provides manual and automatic modes of operation to
ensure maximum adaptation of electric motor to specific operating
conditions with asynchronous motor or permanent magnet motor.
Virtually all functions of VSD are available in the manual mode except for
those associated with Automatic Restart, power-on triggering and timer
operation.
Automatic mode provides the timer operation mode with preset time values
of the VSD start & stop. Besides there is a capability of the VSD automatic
switching-on when supply voltage is applied (if «Power-on start» mode
enable) and after acting protections that permit automatic restart.
In all the modes of operation, the VSD provides following methods of
controlling of the converter output frequency:
• manual frequency control;
• frequency programmed control;
• technological parameter maintenance in oil wells by telemetry
signals;
• maintaining of current preset value (current regulator).
Depending on technological peculiarities of a specific oil well and in order to
resolve probable off-nominal situations during start up, VSD provides
several starting modes:
• soft start;
• start with synchronization;
• jogging;
• swinging;
• unblocking;
• hard.
Triol AK06 VSD provides restriction of the VSD both remote and local control
access. It allows to «Start» or «Stop» through ACS (SCADA) channel remotely,
and also by the digital input signal; «local» control performed only by
pressing « Start» and « Stop» buttons. There is another way to start
and stop the VSD – both remotely and from operator location.

18 EVERYTHING NEW EMERGES NOW

Non-technol. parameter regulator
Triol АК06 VSD easily maintains any technological parameters available in
«Non-technol. parameter regulator» menu.
This menu allows the user to set the value of the supported parameter.
Changing the physical value of a parameter, namely (at, psi, atm, m etc), is
carried out in the «Downhole measurement equipment» menu in the
submenu of each parameter using the «Display format» setting.
For example, to change the «Intake pressure» parameter display values,
follow the next steps:

«Status display» → « LEFT»→ «Downhole measurement equipment» →

« RIGHT» → «Intake pressure» → « RIGHT» → change «Display format»

The logic of maintaining the technological parameter can be easily

performed in the menu of each parameter.
Find more detailed description of the technological parameter in «Downhole
measure equipment» first-level menu».
In addition to the technological parameter maintaining modes, Triol AK06
VSD provides two modes that allow to set the output frequency directly,
these modes are called «Manual F» and «Program F».

www.triolcorp.com 19
Manual mode of operation
In the manual mode of operation electric motor may be started only without
automatic restart. At pressing « START» button the motor starts

operating. At the same time a green LED ( OPERATION) lights up on the

VSD front panel, and the message «START operator» (indicating date and
time of start-up) is displayed in the left part of display in the actual state
displaying mode.

Motor stops running at the moment of pressing the « STOP» button or if

one of the protections operates. At the same time a red light-emitting diode
(«STOP») lights up on the VSD front panel.

If motor is tripped by pressing « STOP» button, «STOP: operator»

message (indicating date and time of shutdown) is represented in the left
part of display in the mode of current state representation.
If ESM starts/stops remotely from the process automated control system the
following messages will be displayed respectively: «START: ACS» and «STOP:
ACS».
If electric motor is tripped due to actuation of a protection the message
«STOP» will be displayed in the left part of the screen indicating the reason
of the shutdown as well as its time and date. If the protection acting
condition is still in effect a message about the active protection will be
displayed on the controller screen. In such a case the motor won’t be able to
start up again (ready-to-run conditions are not available). After restoring the
parameter value abnormality of which caused the protection actuation the
above-mentioned message will disappear.

20 EVERYTHING NEW EMERGES NOW

Automatic mode of operation
This is the basic operating mode of a Variable Speed Drive. In automatic
mode the VSD startup is carried out by pressing « START» button when
the supply voltage is applied (if «Power-on start» mode enable.). Automatic
restarts of Variable Speed Drives are possible after actuation of protections
permitting restarts. After the motor switching-off caused by actuation of the
automatic restart permitting protection the countdown of the automatic
restart delay begins. The yellow light-emitting diode ( STANDBY) lights up
on the VSD front panel; «STOP» message indicating the cause of stop is
displayed indicating also the time left to Automatic Restart. The motor will
start on expiry of this time.

To start the motor during the Automatic Restart delay counting it is

necessary to press « START» button.

If the motor is switched off by a protection not allowing automatic restarts

or after a preset number of automatic restarts has been executed, «STOP»
message indicating the reason of stop will be displayed, and red LED will
light up on the VSD front panel.

If «STOP» command comes from ACS (or « STOP» button is pressed) no

restart will be allowed.

www.triolcorp.com 21
In automatic mode a timer operation of the Variable Speed Drive may be
enabled (by preset time program). The motor ON/OFF time is programmed
separately. The ON state of timer operation is indicated by «Timer» message
in the status line. When timer operation is enabled the controller to display
indicates time left to the motor START/STOP.
Switching of the modes does not change the motor state, i.e. the motor
would keep running if it was in operation before changing the mode, and it
wouldn’t start if tripped.

Pressing « STOP» button always leads to the motor STOP (if it is running)
and prevents its restart. Parameters of the current-regulating function are
given in «Current regulator» menu. Complete list of options of «Maintain
param.» parameter and their description are given in «Modes of operation»
menu section.
Manual frequency control («Manual F» parameter)
In mode of manual frequency (maintain parameter set to «Manual F»)
control an operator assigns a required value to output frequency, and VSD
runs at this preset frequency.

22 EVERYTHING NEW EMERGES NOW

Programmed frequency control («Program F» parameter)
In the mode of programmed frequency control (maintain parameter set to
«Program F») VSD operation is performed by the following program:
• output frequency increases up to the initial value set as a
programmed mode parameter with a rate specified by speeding-up
parameters;
• output frequency increase in the required band with a preset
increment in a time specified by «Freq. change time» parameter of
the programmed mode up to the value set by «End freq.» parameter
of the programmed mode. In case «End freq.» parameter previously
set in «U/F characteristic» menu is less than the maximum frequency
that has been set for programmed mode the frequency will continue
increasing up to the lowest value (out of two).
Programmed operation has a number of advantages related to the VSD
output frequency control:
• output frequency changeability («Output frequency» parameter) that
makes it possible to promptly change the output frequency in
programmed mode of operation without switching over to manual
mode;
• switching over from the programmed mode to the manual one and
vice versa without any need to shut down the motor;
• maintaining preset current value (Current regulator).

www.triolcorp.com 23
If current regulator is active the current value is being automatically
maintained at the present level. Output frequency at that is being changed
depending on the load value.
Operation by timer
Triol AK06 VSD can easily operate according to a specified time program.
There are two operation modes available: «With stop» –consist of operating
time and stop time, and «With freq. 2» — consist of operating time at
frequency set point and working time at frequency 2.
Diagram explaining the basics of each mode is given below:
More detailed description of the mode settings is given in «Operation by
timer» second-level menu in Triol AK06 VSD «Programming manual».

Power on start
Triol AK06 VSD provides the automatic start after restoring the supply
voltage to the rated values. Restoring means that the current supply voltage
value is in the range of values indicated in the product datasheet.
Activation of «Power on start» means that if the supply voltage at the VSD
input terminals drops to a critical level (below 140 V), the supply voltage is
restored to the rated level, and the VSD automatically starts after the time
specified by the «Restart time» mode.

Note: Power on start is

available only in automatic
mode of operation.

When installing the VSD, it is necessary to leave the intake of air, the space
at the sides - at least 200 mm (8 in) in, from above and from the rear –
500 mm (20 in). Input and output of power circuits and control circuits in the
VSD must be made through cable bushings. Cable bushings are installed on
the underside of the cabinet distribution box. Interface cables must be kept
separate from power cables. For noise sensitive circuits it is necessary to use
a shielded cable, or stranded wires in metal hose. The cable shield
(protective sleeve) must be grounded. Ground the cabinet. The grounding
should be carried out with a wire of at least 16 mm2 (7 AWG). It is
recommended to use copper wiring, designed for working at the
temperature of 75 °C (167°F).
Maintenance and repairs must be performed by trained qualified personnel
in accordance with the requirements of the guidelines and regulations of
the operation site.
Variable Speed Drive does not require a constant presence of personnel
while operating. During work inside the VSD follow safety guidelines.

VSD inspection
Periodically, but not more than once in 6 months, lead preventive
inspection and audit a VSD:
1. Disconnect voltage of the power source;
2. Open a main door and doors of cable connection compartments;
3. Use a voltmeter to make sure that there is no voltage on the DC-link
capacitors;
4. Carry out visual inspection of the cabinet and make sure that the
cabinet is free of foreign objects;
5. If dust or dirt is found, blow the power units, control units, structural
and mounting elements with compressed air under pressure
of 4 – 6 kg/cm2(56-85 PSI);
Pay special attention to the heat-sinking surface.

6. Check and tighten, if needed, all bolted and screwed connections of

electrical circuits;
Pay special attention to the terminal blocks of external
connections (power terminals and control circuit terminals).

7. Check and, if needed, tighten all accessible bolt and screwed

connections of electric circuits;
8. Check the state of forced-cooling fans (rotational freedom, lack of
inadmissible axial and radial plays, slaps and runouts);
9. Check the state and performance of door hinges and locks, grease
rubbing parts if required.
Attention! Default of the above-listed requirements can lead to
failures and premature failing of the VSD. Local color change
(discoloration or dimness) of load-bearing elements of the
circuit design, connecting conductors, buses, crimped locks
testifies to their excessive heating.

VSD function testing
Triol recommends to use the product properly and as safely as possible to
prevent any personal injury or material damage.
This is a generic test procedure for VSDs. If the complexity, configuration, or
other aspects of a specific project require additional or substitute tests,
explain on the comments sheets, and attach additional test procedures and
field data. Attach all relevant functional performance verification sheets and
always attach the final signed and dated procedure certification page.
In all test sections, circle or otherwise highlight any responses that indicate
deficiencies. Acceptance requires correction as per the criteria of
acceptance.
This procedure does not address fire or line safety.
Visual Check

Attention! Drive must be OFF.

Make sure that all inner and outside VSD components are in good condition
and don’t have damages.
Drive static check
Attention! Drive must be OFF.
