0.1wb sinusoidally distributed. Its stator has 54 slots having double layer winding. Each coil
has 8 turns and the coil is short-chorded by 1 slot. Evaluate no loading phase and line voltages.
Q=3. In a 3-phase star-connected alternator, there are 2 coil sides per slot and 16 turns per coil.
The stator has 288 slots. When run at 250 rpm the line voltage is 6600 volts at 50 Hz. The coils
are Shot-pitched by 2 slots. Calculate the distribution factor.
Q=4. A 44 MVA, 10.5 kV, 50 Hz, star connected three phases salient pole synchronous
generator has Xd = 1.83 ohms and Xq = 1.21 ohm. It delivers the rated load at 0.8 pf lagging.
The armature resistance is negligible determining the power developed by the generator and %
voltage regulation.
Q=5. A synchronous generator is running overexcited with Ef = 1.40 p.u. This machine, with a
synchronous reactance of 1.20 p.u., is delivering a synchronous power of 0.50 p.u. to the bus.
If the prime mover torque is increased by 1% how much will the synchronous power P and
reactive power Q change?
Q=8. A 3-phase, 50 Hz synchronous machine operates at rated voltage and at a leading power
factor of 0.9. Shaft power is 15 kW and the excitation emf is 400 V. If per phase resistance is
0.5 Ω, find the synchronous reactance. Neglect mechanical loss of the system.
Q=9. A 350 kW, 550V, 400 R0PM, 6 Pole D.C. generator is built with an armature diameter of
0.67m and core length of 0.23 m. The lap wound armature has 700 0conductors. Calculate the
specific electric and magnetic loading.
Q=10. The output coefficient of 1250 KVA, 300 RPM, a synchronous generator is 200 kVA/m3
rps. Evaluate (a) Find the values of the main dimensions (D, L) of the machine if the ratio of
length to diameter is 0.2. Also, calculate the values of main dimensions if (b) specific loading
is decreased by 10 per cent each with speed remaining the same. Assume the same ratio of
length to diameter.
Q=11. Determine the main dimensions of a 1000 kVA, 2200 V, 3 phase, 8 pole, 50 Hz, star-
connected alternator. The winding has a 60° phase spread and the coils are full pitched. The
specific magnetic and electric loading may be taken as 0.62 Wb/m2 and 30,000 ampere
conductors/m. Use circular poles whose ratio of pole arc to pole pitch is 0.65.
Q=12. Find the main dimensions of a 2500 KVA, 187.5 rpm, 50 Hz, 3 phase, 3 kV, salient pole
synchronous generator. The generator is to be a vertical, water-wheel type. The specific
magnetic loading is 0.6 Wb/m2 and the specific electric loading is 34000 A/m. Use circular
poles with the ratio of core length to pole pitch=0.65. Specify the type of pole construction
used if the run-away speed is about 2 times the normal speed.
Q=13. A 2500 kVA, 225 rpm, 3-phase, 60 Hz, 2400 V, star-connected salient pole alternator
has the following design data:

Stator bore= 2.5 m, core length= 0.44 m, slot per pole per phase = 32, conductors per slot =4,
circuits per phase = 2, leakage factor= 1.2, winding factor = 0.95. The flux density in the pole
core is 1.5 Wb/m2, the winding depth is 30 m, the ratio of full load field mmf to armature mmf
is 2, field winding space factor is 0.84 and the field winding dissipates 1800 W/m2 of inner and
outer surface without the temperature rise exceeding the permissible limit. Leave 30 mm for
insulation, flanges and height of pole shoe along the height of pole. Evaluate flux per pole.
Q=14. Determine the stator bore and length for 750 KVA, 50 Hz, 220 V 3 phase star connected
500 rpm alternator. given that the length of armature is equal to the pole pitch. The relation
between the output co-efficient and the diameter is:
Q=15. Two preliminary designs are made for a 3-phase alternator, the two designs differing
only in the number and size of stator slots and the dimensions of stator conductors. The first
design uses 2 slots per pole per phase and there are 9 conductors per slot, each slot being 75
mm deep and 19 mm wide, and the mean width of stator teeth is 25 mm. The thickness of slot
insulation is 2mm; all other insulations may be neglected. The second design is to have 3 slots
per pole per phase. Retaining the same flux density in the teeth and current density in the stator
conductors as in the first design, calculate the dimensions of the stator slots for the second
design. The total height of tip and wedge may be assumed as 5mm.
Q=16. A 3000 rpm, 3 phase, 50 Hz, turbo alternator Has a core length of 0.94 m. The average
gap density is 0.45 Tesla and the ampere conductors per m are 25000. The peripheral speed of
the rotor is 100 m/s and the length of the air gap is 20mm. Find the kVA output of the machine
when the coils are (i) full pitched (ii) short chorded by 1/3rd pole pitch. The winding is
infinitely distributed with a phase spread of 600.
Q=17. A 10 HP, 4 pole, 240 V, 60 Hz, reluctance motor operating under rated load condition
has a torque angle of 30 degree. Calculate load torque on shaft.
