Chapter three – Entropy

Student name: mohammed nabil
_____________________________________________
1- Predict what will happen to the entropy in following cases (decreasing or
increasing):
increase
a. Dissolving sugar in water. _________________________________
b. Diffusion of ammonia in the surrounding area._____________________
increase
c. Conversion of water to ice.____________________________________
decrease
d. Evaporation of ethanol at 20 ˚C.________________________________
increase
2- Describe the differences between the entropy of each pair of the following
compounds according to their states:
a. Br2(l), SƟ = 152.2 J/mol.K and I2(s), SƟ= 116.9 J/mol.K
Br2 is liquid & l2 is gas , so Br2 is more entropy because it is liquid
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b. SO2(g), SƟ= 248.1 J/mol.K and SO3(l), = 95.6 J/mol.K
S02 is gas & SO3 is liquid so, SO2 is more entropy because it is gas
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3- Explain the changes in the entropy in the following reactions:
a. NH3(g) + HCl(g) NH4Cl(s)
entropoy is decrease because of the change from gas to liquid
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
b. 2HI(g) H2(g) + I2(g)
entropy will not change because there is no change in state
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
c. 2K(s) + 2H2O(l) 2KOH(aq) + H2(g)
entropy will increase because of the change from solid and liquid to gas
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4- Calculate the ∆SƟ of the following reactions using the data in the table below.
Substance SƟ (J/mol.K) Substance SƟ (J/mol.K)
Mg(s) 32.7 Cl2(g) 165.0
MgO(s) 26.9 Fe(s) 27.3
Na(s) 51.2 Fe2O3(s) 87.4
NaCl(s) 72.1 H2(g) 130.6
NH4NO3(s) 151.1 H2O(g) 188.7
N2O(g) 219.7 H2O(l) 69.9
O2(g) 205 H2O2(l) 109.6
a. 2H2O2(l) 2H2O(l) + O2(g)

2(69.9) + 205 - 109.6 = 235.2 J/mol.k

b. NH4NO3(s) N2O(g) + 2H2O(g)

219.7 + 2(188.7) - 151.1 = 444.6 J/mol.k

c. 2Mg(s) + O2(g) 2MgO(s)

(2(26.9)) - 2(32.7) + 205 = 193.4 J/mol.k

d. 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) 2NaCl(s)

(2(72.1) - ( (2(51.2) + 165.0) = -122.8 J/mol.k

e. 3Mg(s) + Fe2O3(s) 3MgO(s) + 2Fe(s)

( 3(26.9) + 2(27.3)) - 3(32.7) + 87.4 = 124.6 J/mol.k

5- Calculate the ∆GƟ of the following reactions using the data in the table below
and decide if the reaction is feasible or not.

Substance SƟ (J/mol.K) Substance SƟ (J/mol.K)

Ag2CO3(s) 167.4 H2O(l) 69.9
Ag2O(s) 121.3 Mg(s) 32.7
CH4(g) 186.2 MgCl2(s) 89.6
Cl2(g) 165.0 Na(s) 51.2
CO2(g) 213.6 Na2O2(s) 95.0
H2(g) 130.6 O2(g) 205.0
HCl(g) 187.0
a. H2(g) + Cl2(g) 2HCl(g) ∆HƟ= -184.6 KJ/mol

-207.9632

b. CH4(g) + 2O2(g) CO2(g) + 2H2O(l) ∆HƟ= -890.3 KJ/mol

(213.6 + 2(69.9) ) - (186.2 + 2(205)

1000
c. 2Na(s) + O2(g) Na2O2(s) ∆HƟ= -510.9 KJ/mol
95 - ( 2(51.2) + 205)
= 447.6 KJ/mol

d. Mg(s) + Cl2(g) MgCl2(g) ∆HƟ= -641.3 KJ/mol

89.6 - (32.7 + 165 )
-609 KJ/mol

e. Ag2CO3 (s) Ag2O (s) + CO2(g) ∆HƟ= +167.5 KJ/mol

(213.6 + 121.3) - 167.4 = 117.585 KJ/mol

6- Complete the following table by writing the events of ∆G for each factor.
∆SƟsystem ∆Hr ∆G
+ +
(-) at high T (feasible ) , (+) at low T (not feasible)

- +
feasible

+ -
not feasible

- -
negative at low T(feasible ), positive at high T (not feasible)
