CONTENTS (contd.)
1 INTRODUCTION
This manual has been written for the technicians involved in the service of the Curapuls
970. Service can be carried out by the service organization of the supplier or by any
other technician authorized by Enraf-Nonius B.V.
The manufacturer will not be held responsible for the results of maintenance or repairs
by unauthorized persons.
Enraf-Nonius B.V. is further referred to as Enraf-Nonius
Safe execution of the procedures in this manual requires technical experience and
general knowledge of safety precautions.
Warnings, Cautions and Notes have been used throughout the manual to bring special
matters to the immediate attention of the reader.
Warning: Inside the Curapuls 970 high voltages are available, beware of electrical
shock. Do not touch components or heat sinks when the cover is
removed.
Warning: The HF voltages present in the H.F. output stage can cause heat
sensation and discomfort after long exposure. Adjustment of the coils in
the H.F. generator and the patient circuit is done by using an insulated
bending tool (see par. 3.2).
The sequence of steps in a procedure may also be important from the point of view of
personal safety and prevention of damage, therefore never change the sequence of
procedural steps or alter a procedure.
This manual and the information herein are copyright property of Enraf-Nonius B.V.
(Delft, The Netherlands).
Enraf-Nonius B.V. disclaims any responsibility for personal injury and/or damage to
equipment caused by:
electricity;
- Repairs and/or adjustments made to the equipment with a patient connected.
The following materials have been used for construction of the Curapuls 970:
Please dispose off properly in case of replacement according to the local regulations.
From the point of view of safety and product liability the following data must be
registered for each unit:
The distributor as well as their dealer and/or service organization if any, is responsible
for these records. They must be able to provide these data when requested.
A configuration file gives the serial numbers and/or batch numbers of main sub-
assemblies and/or important parts per unit. The parts listed in a configuration file are
defined as registered parts. Such are for example parts as transformers, PC Boards,
key-boards and software. The registered parts of the Curapuls 970 are marked with a
"Y" for "Yes" in the spare parts list in appendix A (column C).
Enraf-Nonius has the original configuration file of each unit. Any possible changes in
the original configuration of the supplied units must be filed and the distributor must be
able to provide this data. These changes can simply be stored in the service file of the
specific unit. Part, serial or batch number(s) of the new parts have to be mentioned.
In case of a claim we expect the distributor to report the claim and the actual
configuration data of the equipment in question.
The documentation set for the Curapuls 970 also incudes an Instruction manual and a
therapy book. The instruction manual is a recommended item for all service engineers.
Ordering data:
1.1.6 Installation
For installation of the Curapuls 970 see the Operating Instruction manual.
- It is not allowed to use this unit in so-called "wet rooms" (hydrotherapy rooms).
- The mains supply connections must comply with the national requirements regarding
medical used rooms.
- Before connection of this apparatus to the mains supply, check that the mains
voltage and frequency stated on the type plate of this apparatus correspond to that
of the mains supply. The 230V model is intended for nominal mains voltages of 220-
240V. The 240V model is intended for nominal mains voltages of 230-250V, the
115V version for voltages of 110-120V.
- This apparatus must only be connected to a wall socket with protective earth
connection.
- A potential equalisation cable may be connected to this unit if prescribed in the
national regulations.
- Make sure that no conductive (iron) parts are present in a radius of about four
metres from the working short-wave therapy unit because these can operate as
secondary antennae and can therefore make the total electro-magnetic field, and
hence the
HF-interference, stronger.
- Any electronic apparatus within a radius of 2 to 4 metres from a working short-wave
therapy unit is expected to be disturbed in such a way that EMI screening parts will
not have any result.
- A special screening cage according to Faraday is able to prevent HF-interference to
other electronic apparatus. This type of screening cage gives in practically all cases
a 100% solution (H.F. suppression more than 60dB at 27MHz).
1.1.7 Modifications
In order to continuously improve the quality of our products, Enraf-Nonius requests her
service organizations to report any structural problem which may be discovered. When
the same problem regularly occurs or when safety problems occur, we would like you to
send us a product complaint report. The report must contain the name, the type of the
product, a detailed description of the problem, the number of the same problems,
quantity of sold equipment and your solution to the problem (if any). The product

1.2 GENERAL
The Curapuls 970 is a shortwave unit that enables HF energy to be applied selectively deep in
the tissues and joints without unnecessarily affecting the surrounding area. This is effected
through capacitive or inductive electrodes. The capacitive electrodes have a larger surface
effect, the induction electrodes a larger effect in the deeper tissues.
The Curapuls 970 offers two therapy possibilities: continuous and pulsed.
In continuous shortwave therapy the subjective feeling of warmth plays the major role. The
output is continuous and can be set to a maximum of 400 W. The automatic tuning ensures that
the selected intensity is maintained throughout the treatment. This technique increases the
circulation and stimulates metabolic processes.
Pulsed shortwave therapy is an athermic technique with enhanced biological effects. The
maximum output is 1000 W (peak power), the mean output is much lower: between 6 and 80 W,
depending on the selected pulse repetition frequency (which can be set in 10 steps from 15 -
200 Hz).
Furthermore, acute conditions where heat treatment is contraindicated can very well be treated
with shortwave therapy. Even the presence of metal implants is not an absolute
contraindication.
- Post-operative conditions.
- Acute inflammations.
- Acute sport injuries such as hematomas and sprains.
The Curapuls 970 has been designed and manufactured to ensure the highest level of safety;
the unit fully complies with the IEC 601-1 and IEC 601-2-3 standards.

2 DESCRIPTION
Because of the modular construction of the Curapuls 970 the description is on block
diagram level.
The user interface module enables the communication between the timer up/down
switches and the timer circuits on the timer/display module. Also a tuning indication
LED is found on the user interface PC Board.
The timer/display module controls the input data from the user interface module and the
continuous/pulsed mode switch which is found on the mode switch PC Board. Also a
treatment timer display and an output power bar display are found on the display PC
Board.
All treatment parameter settings and user actions are checked by the P and program
memory. The selection switches at the front panel and information from the intensity
control are scanned by the P. Also the user actions and the sequence of the actions
are checked before these are executed. The therapy settings are converted into the
signal which drives the high frequency output stage.
The relay/power supply module connects the different modules and is used as an
“central connection PC Board”. Also on the relay PC Board power supply circuits and
relays are found.
- Relays
- Sower supply circuits
- Fuses
All main modules (except the user interface module) are connected to the relay/power
supply module. The PC Board is used as an “central connection PC Board”. The main
supply is fed into the relay PC Board via the mains fuses, a mains filter and the mains
switch. Power supply circuits with fused outputs, fed by a power transformer (via a
resistor PC Board), are supplying the power for the electronic circuits. The relays on
the PC Board are used for safety circuits and for switching between different modes of
the Curapuls 970. The relay PC Board also supplies the power used for the intensity
control (a variac).
The tuning module is designed for an automatic tuning of the output circuit. When the
output circuit is tuned correctly the output is maximal with respect to the set output
power.
- Phase detector
- Tuning motor driver circuits
The principal of the automatic tunning device is based on the measurement of the
phase angle between current and voltage in the patient circuit. The current information
(I-info signal) is available via the current-info PC Board (found in the patient circuit, see
2.5.1), the voltage information (U-info signal) is available at the harmonics filter circuit of
the H.F. generator. Both signals are fed into the tuning PC Board. The phase angle
between current and voltage is zero only when the output circuit is tuned to the
generator frequency. When current and voltage are in phase, the output circuit
behaves as a ohmic circuit.
When the circuit is off-tune there is a phase angle between current and voltage, positive
or negative according to whether the detuning is capacitive or inductive. The more the
detuning, the larger the phase angle. The phase comparator measures the difference
between the phase angles and corrects the phase angle by tuning the capacitor in the
patient circuit with the tuning motor. The tuning motor is driven by a motor driver circuit.
When the driver circuit is active (tuning the patient circuit) an indication LED lights on
the front panel.
The high frequency module generates the H.F. output as specified for the
Curapuls 970.
- Transmitting tube
- H.F. Filter circuits
The H.F. output power which is generated has a frequency of 27.12MHz. and is
transmitted by an electronic tube. The power required for the filament of the tube is
supplied by the power supply transformer and the filament power supply PC Board.
The supplied power is fed into the H.F. Generator via a filter circuit and lead-trough
capacitors to reduce radiated interference. The filament is heated as soon as the
power of the Curapuls 970 is switched on.
The output power is depending on the selected value of the intensity control ( a variac)
which is connected to a high voltage transformer. The high voltage output is connected
via the discharge PC Board and the high voltage connection PC Board to the high
frequency generator.
The high frequency output energy is taken from the anode circuit of the tube. The H.F.
output flows via a harmonics filter, which substantially suppresses the harmonics of the
generator frequency, to the patient circuit. This filter is required to avoid excessive
interference on surrounding ratio, TV. and personal computer equipment. The H.F.
generator and the harmonics filter are mounted in a screened housing in order to
prevent direct or indirect radiation of frequencies other than 27.12MHz.
The patient circuit is symmetrically coupled to the harmonics filter by means of two coils
and is floating with respect to earth (galvanic separation). The tuning of the patient
circuit is done by a (tuning)motor driven split-stator capacitor (see par. 2.1.4). The
current information (I-info) which is needed for the tuning, is supplied by the current-info
PC Board which is found in the patient circuit. The patient is part of the of the load
circuit.
For the repair and maintenance procedures of the Curapuls 970 the following test
equipment and accessories are required:
- Digital multimeter 3 1/2 digit, accuracy better than 1 %. For example Fluke 77
- Two beam oscilloscope, >30MHz, accuracy better than 5%. For example Philips PM
3055
- Safety tester according IEC 601-1. For example a Biotec 601 PRO safety tester
- Moving coil galvanometer 0 - 100 mA DC (grid current)
- Moving coil galvanometer 0 - 400 mA DC (anode current)
- Universal frequency counter 30 MHz. For example Thandar TF 200
- Neon check light
Note: Both moving coil galvanometers must be shunted by a capacitor (e.g. 0.1F,
400V) to protect the meter against H.F.
It is assumed that a complete set of precision engineering tools is available. For the
service of the Curapuls 970 the following additional tools are required:
4 MAINTENANCE
4.1 GENERAL
4.2 CHECKLIST
The following procedures must be carried out during an inspection and/or after every
repair:
4.2.1 Modifications, if any, according to the "Service Info" sheets. See appendix C of this
manual for further information.
4.2.2 Visual inspection. Check the electrical wiring for safety and check that all components
are properly fastened. Check that the fuses have the specified ratings (see par. 1.3.1).
Pull out the dark gray plate electrode connecting pin at the rear side of te electrode to
its maximum.
Slide the pin back into the electrode as far as the fourth marking (i.e. almost maximum
distance) see figure 1. Make sure that all six lamps inside the dummy load are
connected. Put the dummy load in between these electrodes. Also make sure that the
electrodes are centred between the markings on the dummy load. Also the electrodes
must have contact with the dummy load over the full surface see figure 2.
Select the continuous mode and set the treatment timer on 30 minutes (press once at
the “-” key). After setting the time, the fan starts to run; the timer itself does not yet
start.
Turn the intensity control fully anti-clockwise and then fully clockwise up to the
maximum position. The timer then starts and the automatic tuning device also operates;
after a few seconds the yellow tuning indicator goes out (if not see par. 4.4.1.6), the bar
display will totally light up (full scale) and the dummy load indicates approx. 400 Watts
at 220V mains supply, 440 Watts at 230V mains supply (if not see par. 4.4.1.4).
Switch the Curapuls 970 to pulsed-mode position "200". The timer will stop, the yellow
tuning indicator illuminates and the bar-display goes out. Turn the intensity control fully
anti-clockwise and again fully clockwise; hence the yellow pulse-indicator will light, the
timer starts to run again, the tuning indicator goes out (if not see par. 4.4.1.6) and the
bar-display will indicate around value "80". The carbon filament lamps inside the
dummy load will only glow (if not see par. 4.4.1.4).
Check the operation of the timer (treatment time-setting, time-duration, audio signal at
the end of the treatment) with the “up and down keys“. Check whether at the end of the
treatment time the buzzer sounds, the fan stops, the tuning indicator lights, the pulse
indicator stops lighting and the bar-display goes out.
Note: Indication that the timer is running is given by the pulsed on/off illumination of
the decimal dot in the clock display.
Check the tuning device as described in par. 4.6.5, 4.6.5.1 and 4.6.5.2
If the functioning of the tuning device is not correct perform the adjustment according to
par. 4.6.5.3.
Pull out the dark grey plate electrode connecting pin at the rear side of te electrode to
its maximum.
Slide the pin back into the electrode as far as the fourth marking (i.e. almost maximum
distance) see figure 1. Make sure that all six lamps inside the dummy load are
connected.
Put the dummy load in between these electrodes. Also make sure that the electrodes
are centred between the markings on the dummy load. Also the electrodes must have
contact with the dummy load over the full surface see figure 2.
Switch on the Curapuls 970 and select the pulsed mode and set the treatment timer on
30 minutes (press once at the “-” key). After setting the time, the fan starts to run; the
timer itself does not yet start.
Turn the intensity control fully anti-clockwise and then fully clockwise up to the
maximum position.
Check with an ordinary neon- or fluorescent lamp all pulse positions (15 ... 200) .
Loosen the two screws and remove the small cover at the rear side of the generator
housing (see appendix B fig. 13, item A) to access the grid current terminals.
Make a short connection between the red terminal of the grid lead and the generator
housing (earth) and check that the H.F. is then switched off via safety relay D. For this
test use a testing lead or grip-insulated pliers.
Set the apparatus in the continuous mode. Turn the intensity control fully anti-clockwise
and then clockwise up to setting "2".
Now switch over to any pulsed-mode position and check whether relay D is then
energized, the H.F. switches off.
Switch off the Curapuls 970. Close the small cover at the rear side of the generator
housing which gives access to the grid current terminals.

pulling it off. Remove the knob. See par. 4.5.3 for removal of the top
cover. Disconnect the wiring from the variac. Remove the variac.
The adjustment procedure for the Curapuls 970 is carried out under the following test
conditions:
- The mains voltage must correspond with the technical specifications of the Curapuls
970
- The ambient temperature must be 25° C ± 5° C
Before adjusting the Curapuls 970 first check the voltages of the power supply (see par.
4.6.1).
Note: Before switching on the Curapuls 970 put the thermal cut-out (switch at the
top- right side of the rear side) in OFF position, no H.F. energy is generated.
Switch on the Curapuls 970 and measure the following voltages on the Relay PC
Board:
Remove the rear cover of the Curapuls 970 (see par. 4.5.2)
Note: Checking of the grid current is possible without opening the generator housing.
Loosen the two screws and remove the
small cover at the rear side of the generator
housing (see appendix B fig. 13, item A) to
access the terminals.
For adjustment of the grid
current the generator housing must be
opened.
- Connect a milliampere-meter (moving coil) (0 - 100mA, DC), see par. 3.1, to the
terminals (red = positive input of the mA-meter, black = negative input of the mA-
metre) at the rear side of the generator housing.
- Disconnect any cables from the patient terminals.
- Switch on the unit.
- Check the mains power supply voltage at connection strip KA (terminals KA-5 and
KA-8 for 230V mains supply), see appendix B Fig. 28 for supply configuration.
Note: The Curapuls 970 works internally with a supply voltage of 230V. Other
supply voltages are accomplished by using an autotrafo in the mains supply
circuit.
- Select constant output mode and set the timer for approx. 5 minutes.
- Turn the intensity control fully anti-clockwise and then fully clockwise up to the
maximum position.
With a mains supply voltage of 230V the grid current should be 94.5mA (a mains supply
voltage of 220V results into a grid current of 90mA).
When the mains supply is not exactly 230V (220V), see figure 4 for the relation between
the mains supply voltage and the grid current.
Caution: Make sure that there is no short circuit between the windings.
Note: When the H.F. generator housing is opened the current will read approx. 2mA
higher.
- Switch off the unit, disconnect the mA-metre and close the generator housing.
Remove the rear cover of the Curapuls 970 (see par. 4.5.2)
Warning: Be careful: do not touch the high voltage capacitor because it can still be
charged.
Make use of a fully insulated tool for this purpose; we recommend to use the insulated
position hook, (2), see fig. 5.
It is not necessary to decouple the tuning capacitor (1) from the motor (3).
The maximum output power has to be 440 Watts at a mains supply of 230V (400W at a
mains supply of 220V).
1 Tuning capacitor
3 Tuning motor
- Switch off the H.F. output by switching off the thermal cut-out (F3) at the right top at
the housing.
- Bend the secondary output coil according to the above (do not make
short-connection between the windings).
- Switch on the H.F. output with the thermal cut-out (F3).
- Check the output power
- Switch off the unit, disconnect the mA-metre and close the generator housing.
- Reconnect the red wire from the tuning motor to the tuning board (terminal T1).
When the output power is correct then check whether the anode current is between 230
and 320 mA (less than 350 mA, which is the limit for the TB3/750) measured at
terminals Ia on the relay PC Board.
When the output current is correct switch off the unit, disconnect the mA-metre and
close the generator housing.
Warning: Be careful: do not touch the high voltage capacitor because it can still be
charged.
- Switch on the unit, H.F. switched off (with cut-out F3) and set continuous mode.
- Set the treatment timer on 30 minutes (press once at the “-” key).
- Turn the intensity control fully anti-clockwise and then clockwise up to position “7".
- Take a wire of approx. 2 metres and connect one end to the input of a digital
frequency counter (range: 0 - 30 MHz) and put the other end in the neighbourhood of
the dummy load (no galvanic contact!). The wire now operates as a antenna (also a
frequency counter with built-in antenna can be used).
- Close test link LK1 on the relay PC Board with a test lead (see appendix B fig. 18).
- Switch on the H.F. (with cut-out F3).
- Adjust the tuning capacitor (C29) manually to maximum reading on the dummy load.
Make use of a fully insulated tool for this purpose; we recommend to use the
insulated position hook, (2), see fig. 5.
After that read the frequency on the frequency counter. With closed generator housing,
the frequency should be 27.12 MHz (± 0.6%).
If necessary, the frequency can be re-adjusted as follows:
- Switch off the unit completely, open the generator housing (see par. 4.5.4).
- DISCHARGE air-capacitor C31 (via anode clamp, top of the transmitting tube) as
well as coil L8 (see fig. 8) to earth (generator housing) with a grip-insulated
screwdriver.
After loosening the milled nut (on the right above) of the first capacitor plate of C31, the
frequency can be set by adjusting the dista
nce of this plate with respect to
the second plate.
If the frequency was too high, the
capacitor plate must be put inward a
bit. If the frequency was too low, the
capacitor plate must be put outward a
bit. Lock the position of the plate with
the milled nut and check the
frequency again.
B1 Transmitting tube
For this purpose we use the dummy load (70 Ohms) with the Ø130mm plate electrodes
in position 4 (see fig. 1) unless otherwise specified.
Perform the test above also with the intensity control in position “10".
- Switch on the unit (continuous mode position), set the timer and turn the intensity
control to the minimum position.
- Switch off the H.F. by means of the cut-out F3; as a result the tuning capacitor keeps
on turning.
- Make a short connection between measuring points MP4 and MP5 with a test lead
or use a crocodile clip (see appendix B, fig. 16) on the tuning board. The tuning
capacitor now turns at a lower speed (check that preset potentiometer P102, which
Before adjusting the tuning device perform the friction-resistance test of the tuning
capacitor (par 4.6.5.1). For this purpose we use the dummy load (70 Ohms) with the
Ø130mm plate electrodes in position 4 (see fig. 1).
Note: If, with low intensity settings, the tuning device does not operate correctly, then
the current-data must be increased by increasing the coupling between L13
(primary I-info coil), and L 14 (secondary I-info coil on current info PC Board)
see fig. 9.
If, on the other hand, with full intensity, the tuning is very unquiet, then the
current-data must be decreased by decreasing the coupling L13/L14.
However, after any change in the coupling between L13 and L14, the preset
potentiometer P101 has to be re adjusted to maximum output into the dummy
load.
By means of P101, the maximum output transferred into the dummy load
ought to be adjustable in such a way that, by turning control P101, the reading
on the dummy load smoothly increases or decreases so that the exact
maximum can easily be found. If the output power drops all of a sudden by
turning P101 slowly, then this indicates that the tuning devices overloaded
because of an exceptional high current-information voltage (current-data).
The best results will be obtained when, with full intensity, the tuning device is just not
overloaded.
When the output power is correct switch off the apparatus and disconnect the dummy
load.
This chapter contains information about the storage and transport of the Curapuls 970
and the storage conditions for the spare parts.
5.1 STORAGE
The Curapuls 970 and any accessories must always be stored in their original packing.
For the spare parts of the Curapuls 970 the above mentioned requirements also apply.
5.2 TRANSPORT
The Curapuls 970 and any accessories should always be transported in its original
packing. This packing withstands normal shocks and vibration caused by transport.
During transport and short term storage the temperature should be between - 40 °C and
+ 70 °C. The absolute temperature is not too important, however, rapid fluctuations in
temperature must be avoided.

Service Information
From the first of February the Curapuls 970 is delivered with reinforced base plate. The reinforced
base plate prevents the castors of the Curapuls 970 to become out of line/loose. This may happen
when the Curapuls 970 is not handled with care, e.g. when lifting from the packing/pallet and landed
on 1 or 2 wheels with great shock. (or when collided with relative high speed against a doorstep).
A modification is advised for Curapuls 970 units delivered before that date.
Units with a new baseplate (from series 2) or modified base plate are labelled with Modification record
1 on the type plate.

Service Information
The integrated circuit (XR2228) which is used as a phase comparator is no longer available.
A piggy-back PC Board is used to replace the phase comparator.
Warning: Capacitor C126 has been moved from the phase detector PC Board to the piggy
back phase detector PC Board. When adjusting capacitor C126 make sure
that the distance between your hands and the high voltage connections
(capacitor at the chassis and high voltage connections at the generator
housing) is enough to prevent electrical shock.
