Study the pattern below.

Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4

a Complete the row in the table below for Figure 5.

b How many squares are there in Figure 30?
c Which figure has exactly 25 squares?

SOLUTION 1

Figure Number of squares

a
1 1 = 1 = 1 + (0 2)
2 3 = 1+2 = 1 + (1 2)
3 5 = 1+2+2 = 1 + (2 2)
4 7 = 1+2+2+2 = 1 + (3 2)
5

n 1 + [(n 1) 2]

b Number of squares in Figure 30 = 1 + [(30 – 1) 2]

= 1 + (29 2)
= 59

There are 59 squares in Figure 30.

c 1 + [(n 1) 2] = 25
(n 1) 2 = 24
(n 1) = 12
n = 13

Figure 13 has exactly 25 squares.

SOLUTION 2

Figure Number of squares

a
1 1 = (2 × 1) – 1
2 3 = (2 × 2) – 1
3 5 = (2 × 3) – 1
4 7 = (2 × 4) – 1
5 9 = (2 × 5) – 1

n 2n 1

b Number of squares in Figure 30 = 2 × 30 – 1

= 60 – 1
= 59

There are 59 squares in Figure 30.

c 2n – 1 = 25
2n = 25 + 1
= 26
n = 26 ÷ 2
= 13

Figure 13 has exactly 25 squares.

General Formulas for Equal Intervals

Number to add/subtract
Method 1: Method 2: to adjust to fit the pattern.

nth term: First number + (n 1) difference nth term: (difference n) ± ?

Using Example 1, Using Example 1,

nth term = 1 + (n – 1) 2 2×1+?=1 2+?=1
= 1 + 2n – 2 2×2+?=3 4+?=3
= 2n – 1 2×3+?=5 6+?=5

Since ? can only be –1,

nth term = 2n – 1

Check if your formula for the nth term is correct by replacing n with 1, 2 and 3 and see if the
number you obtain with the formula is the same number for that given figure.

There are 400 dots in Figure 20.

b n × n = 225
n = 15

Figure 15 has exactly 225 dots.

At the end of today’s lesson, students should be able to:

General approach for number patterns arranged in a table:

1. Observe how the numbers are arranged in the table.

2. How many numbers are there in a group?
3. For some patterns, you may need to minus the “extra” numbers.

EXAMPLE 1

The numbers 1 to 35 are written in columns as shown:

A B C D E F G
1 3 5 7
13 11 9
15 17 19 21
27 25 23
29 31 33 35
… … … … … … …

If the pattern continues, in which column will the number 97 be written?

SOLUTION

The numbers are arranged in groups of 7.

97 + 1
Position of the number 97 =
2
= 49
This means that 97 is the 49th number in the pattern.
49 7=7R0
As there is no remainder, 97 it must be the last member of the group.

The number 97 lies in Column B.

D 1 7 13 19 …
E 2 8 14 20 …
F 3 9 15 21 …

If the pattern continues, in which row and column will the number 185 appear?

SOLUTION

185 – 3 = 182
182 6 = 30 R 2
Row = B
Column = 1 + 30 + 1
= 32

The number 97 lies in Row B and Column 32.
