Name HARDENED AND TEMPERED
1. Scope
This specification provides requirements for heat resistant steel which has been hardened and
tempered.
2. Applicable Documents
Applicable documents listed below may be obtained from the respective organizations listed in
CES 10054, Standards Organizations Addresses.
3. Definitions
There are no unique definitions in this standard. Terms used in this standard that have a general
definition for usage in Cummins Engineering Standards are defined in CES 10056, Glossary.
4. Specifications
4.1. Significance and Use
4.1.1. This specification provides requirements for heat resistant steel which has been
hardened and tempered. Material processed to this specification is most frequently used in fastener
applications. It is suitable for use at temperatures up to 538 degrees Celsius (1000 degrees
Fahrenheit)
Chemical composition shall meet the requirements of the appropriate material described in
CES 31080.
4.4.1. Hardness shall be 30-38 HRC when measured in accordance with ASTM E 18.
4.4.2. Tensile properties for bars machined from fasteners shall be tested in accordance with
ASTM A 370.
4.4.2.1. Tensile strength shall be 123000 pounds per square inch (848 megapascals)
minimum.
4.4.2.2. Tensile yield strength at 0.2% offset shall be 101000 pounds per square inch (696
megapascals) minimum.
4.5. Structure
4.5.1. Matrix microstructure shall be examined at a magnification not lower than 500x when
etched with two percent nital.
4.5.1.1. Microstructure shall consist of a normalized and tempered structure with fine
uniformly dispersed carbide. Ferrite may be in a typical Widmanstatten pattern or uniformly
dispersed. Small regions of tempered martensite shall be noted but are not cause for rejection.
Fasteners processed to this specification shall have threads rolled after heat treatment. Allowable
surface defects shall be evaluated in accordance with SAE J123.
