Final Exam

Course :Applied Statistics

Lecturer : Prof. Dr.Alaa Abdelbary
Date :

Time : 2 hours

Student Name : Mohamed Al-Saeed Ahmed Samy Baioumi

Registration ID number: 20226180

1. For the following Data :

1000 , 1500 , 1750 , 15000 , 10000

Find
Mean( X ) , Median , Mode , Range, Mean Deviation (MD), and Standard Deviation
(SD).

Answer:

Mean( X ): = (1000+1500+1750+15000+10000)/5
= 5850

Median = 1750

Mode= No Mode

Range= 15000 – 1000 = 14000

Mean Deviation =

X X- X (X- X )2
1000 -4850 23522500
1500 -4350 18922500
1750 -4100 16810000
10000 4150 17222500
15000 9150 83722500
Sum (X) 0 160200000

Standard Deviation= S=6328.506

Mean Deviation=

Mean Deviation=
Mean Deviation=5320
2. For the following Data :

X 1 2 3 4 5 6
Y 10 8 7 6 5 5

Find the regression line

Y = aX +b
Then find the value of Y when X = 10

Answer:
X Y XY X2 (Square)
1 10 10 1
2 8 16 4
3 7 21 9
4 6 24 24
5 5 25 25
6 5 30 30
21 41 126 93

Given:

n=6 ∑X = 21 ∑Y = 41 ∑XY = 126 ∑X2 = 93

1: Find the regression line

Y = aX +b

a=

b=

a=(6*126-(21*41))/(6*91-441)=(756-861)/(546-441)=-1
b=41/6 +1*(21/6)=6.8333+3.5=10.333

Y=-1X+10.333
Y=-10+10.333 =0.333
3. In a study of the effectiveness of an insecticide against a certain insect a
large area of land was sprayed. Later the area was examined for live insects by
randomly selecting squares and counting the number of live insects per square. Past
experience has shown the average number of live insects per square after spraying
to be 0.5. If the number of live insects per square follows a Poisson distribution,
what is the probability that a selected square will contain:

(a) No live insects? (b) Exactly one live insect?

(c) Exactly four live insects?
(d)One or more live insects

Answer:
a) P(x=0)=
b) P(x=1)=
c) P(x=4)=
d) P(x )=1-P(x=0)
4. The time needed to complete final examination in a particular college course is
normally distributed with a mean of 80 minutes and standard deviation 10 minutes
i. What is the probability of completing the exam in one hour or less ?
ii. Assume that the class has 60 students and that the examination period is 90
minutes in length . How many students do you expect will be unable to
complete the exam in the allotted time ?

Answer

i. P(X
Z=(60-80)/10=-2
P(Z 0.9772=0.0228
ii. P(x 90)
Z=(90-80)/10=1
P(Z 1)= =0.8413
The probability of 60 students will be able to complete exam is
60*0.8413=50.478
5. In developing patient appointment schedules, a medical center wants an estimate of the mean time that
a staff member spends with each patient. How large a sample should be taken if the desired margin of
error is 2 minutes at a 95% level of confidence? Use a planning value for the population standard
deviation of 8 minutes.

Answer:

Given,
Margin of error = 2 minutes
Standard deviation = 8
a)
Critical value = Z α/2 =1.96 ......From the standard normal table.
The sample size can be calculated as,
n= (Z α/2 × σ / MOE)2
n=( [1.96×8] / 2)2
n=61.4633
n=62
Therefore, the required sample size is 62.
b)
Critical value = Z α/2 = 2.5758 ......From the standard normal table.
The sample size can be calculated as,
n=( [Z α/2 ×σ] / MOE)2
n=([2.5758×8] / 2)2
n=106.1583
n=107
Therefore, the required sample size is 107
6. An American Express retail survey found that 16% of U.S. consumers had used the internet to buy
gifts during the holiday's season. If 1285 customers participated in the survey , what is the interval
estimate of the population proportion of the customers using the internet to buy gifts ? use 95%
confidence .

Answer:

R=0.16
N=1285
0.02
Max=R+0.02
Min=R-0.02
7. A recent national survey found that high school students watched an average
( Mean ) of 6.8 videos per month . A random sample of 100 college students revealed that the mean
number of videos watched last month was 6.2 with standard deviation 0.5 . At the 0.05
level of significance , can we conclude that college students watch fewer videos a month than high
school students ?

Answer:
X1=6.8

So because of we accept
8. . A Nielsen survey provided the estimate that the mean number of hours of television viewing per
household is 7.25 hours per day . assume that the Nielsen survey involved 200 households and that the
sample standard deviation was 2.5 hours per day . Ten years ago the population mean number of hours of
television viewing per household was reported to be 6.70 hours . Letting µ = the population mean
number of hours of television viewing per household in , test the hypotheses
H : µ ≤ 6.70 and
H : µ  6.70 . use α = 0.01 .

Answer:
H0: µ=6.7
Ha: µ>6.7 (Right Tail test)

Level of Significance, a= 0.010

Sample std dev , S=2.500
Sample size , n = 200
Sample mean, X = 7.250

Standard error , SE= S/ √n = 2.5/√200=

0.1768

t-test statistic = (Ẍ - µ) / SE=

(7.25 – 6.7)/ 0.1768
= 3.111
Degree of freedom = DF = n-1 = 199

P-value = 0.0011
(Excel formula –(t-stat , df))

Decision : p-values , reject null hypothesis
