Introduction To Geography
Geography is the fundamental science that helps us to understand our physical environment, its
elements and components forming a complex structure of the world
Geographers study the factors responsible for spatial distribution and variation of peoples places with
their locations. Physical geographers explain the phenomenon of evolution of landforms, tectonics
movements, weather and climate, ocean characteristics and properties. Human geographers explain the
interrelationship between peoples and his environment. The study of the earth system with specific
approaches by geographers has therefore specialized branches of geography.
Geography is related to the distribution of the various features natural or man-made on the surface of
the Earth
The Greek philosopher Eratosthenes was the first to coin the term geography derived from the two
words. i.e. geo means earth and graphe means description of earth surface and the entire phenomena
appearing on it. Different scholars had different point of views over geography.
RICHARD HARTSCHRONE; Geography is a discipline that seeks to describe and interpret the variable
character from place to place of the earth as the world of man
BOWMAN; Geography tells what is where, why and what it is made of.
DAVID HARVEY; Geography is concerned with the description and explanation of the differentiation of
the earth surface.
Nature
Geography is one the important subjects of understanding the spatial sciences of the earth in relation
with the components of the physical and human aspects. Physical geography as a science studies of the
earth surface and characteristics representing spatial relationships and varying regional patterns.
