BRACED FRAME VS UNBRACED FRAME

Recall the two types of secondary moments and as illustrated in figure below

These are caused by the effect of deflection due braced condition and effect of sway
due to lateral translation. To approximate this two effects two amplification factors B1
and B2 shall be used for these two types of moments so that the required moment shall
be

where

The required axial strength must also be amplified to account for second order effects.

BRACED FRAMES / NON-SWAY FRAMES

Recall that to account for the distribution of moments within the beam-column
member a modification factor Cm is used as discuss in the previous lecture where

1. With no transverse loading

2. With transverse loading

Note : for a more refined calculation the following formula may be used

or may obtained from Tables

MOMENT AMPLIFICATION B1

Solution

LRFD Method

1. Compute Factored Load Combination 2

The factored forces are shown below and the moment values at quarter points were
computed by simple proportions.
2. Compute Column Strength (No Local buckling) - Buckling about weak axis

Inelastic Buckling

Check
greater than 0.20 hence Column Behaviour
3. Beam Strength (In Plane Bending)

Check for Compactness

Check for Lateral Torsional Buckling

Moment Gradient Cb 1993 Formula

The above value exceeds Mp=403.33 kip-ft.

Hence use Mn=395.771 kip-ft

The Moment Strength using =0.9

4. Determine Amplified Moment Mr

Since there are no lateral translation ( =0), the above equation shall be
reduced to

Applying AISC Equation H1-1a
