HAS LIFE CHANGED COMPARED TO MY PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS

As a child born in 2005 and being a part of Generation Z, I have always wondered what life
was like for my parents growing up in the 70s and 80s. Your growth and life pattern mostly depend
on geographical and cultural factors. In this instance, my parents were born and raised in West
Africa, specifically Ghana. I have always wondered what it was like for my parents growing up in
olden-day Africa. My curious mind could not get over this thought and I ended up asking my parents.
“Mummy, Daddy, how was life like growing up”? I asked my busy parents. The first statement I
received was that I am having it easy growing up in this generation. I firmly disagreed with that in my
head until I heard my parents rant about several things that made life harder back then.

Firstly, in the 70s and 80s, Ghana was very underdeveloped to the average Ghanaian. Doing
chores as kids involved hard manual labor such as weeding farms, hand washing clothes and dishes
and drying them under the sun, sweeping the house and its compound with a small hand held
broom made out of tree branches, and so on.

Secondly, kids in the community had to make up games to play to entertain themselves.
Some games like “ampe”, “hopscotch” and “hide and seek” were said to be very popular back in the
day. Also, during certain nights, campfires were made where folktales and mythical stories were told
by a grandparent or parent in the community. This was the way for the community to come together.

Thirdly, transporting and traveling from one place to another was hectic, especially in
extreme and terrible weather conditions. Back then, you had to walk miles and kilometers if you had
to go somewhere. My parents claimed that it was very tiring as most of their destinations involving
school were very far from their homes.

Lastly, communicating with family and friends was not a walk in the park. Back then
messages were sent by means of snail mail. This is when your mail is sent or hand delivered by a
hired personnel who usually goes by foot or bicycle. It usually took weeks to have your message
delivered and another week or more to get a reply. This made communication and hearing from
family and friends were difficult.

On the other hand, in current times, most chores are done by machines instead of manual
labor like back then. For example, laundry can be washed and dried in a washing machine, dishes can
be washed and dried with a dishwasher, and so on. Also, entertainment options are unlimited
ranging from various social media platforms like Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook and so on.
Communication I easier now with the use of smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. Moving
from one place to another isn’t much of a chore now since there are cars and other motorized
vehicles at our disposal.

With all this, I concluded that life was harder back then for my parents as Gen Ys and Xs grew
up as compared to me growing up as a Gen Z.

Some ways to connect better with older workers/generations include:

1. Communicate with respect.

2. Try to communicate or talk in person or over a phone call.
3

3. Be concise with what you say and do not beat around the bush.
4. Use a formal way of talking and communicating.
