1lPage USER EDUCATION Education is lifelong process. Origin of user education is tracked back from Harvard College in 1820. Early librarians were professors who taught parttime in academic libraries for use of library. In the mid of seventies American Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) came into being to advocate Library instructions as a mean for developing competent library and information access skills along with their use as the part of lifelong leaning process. UNESCO defined user education, to include any efforts or program which will guide and instruct any existing and potential user individually or collectively with the objectives of; ‘Recognizing their own information needs. Formulating these needs. a. b. ¢. Using information services effectively and efficiently and 4 Assessing these services. User education means to educate users in the use of library resources and services. User education may be defined as a program through which users are provided training to the use of library services’-—-mean how to identify, locate and use best needed information. ‘According to Wikipedia “Library Orientation (also called bibliographic instruction BI) user education and library orientation consists of instructional program designed to teach library users how to locate information they need quickly and effectively”. Reitz (2004) has defined user education in the Dictionary of Library and Information Science, that “all the activities involved in teaching user that how to make the best possible use of library resources, services, facilities including formal and informal instructions delivered by a librarian or other staff ‘member one-on-one or in a group”. Bibliographic Instruction is a broader term of User Education. Synonyms for User education are; i Library orientation programs ii. User orientation iii. Library instruction iv. User instructions, and information literacy. COMPONENTS OF USER EDUCATION There are three components of user education 1. Library Orientation, Means the ways of general instructional method of lib services, rules and regulations and facilities available in a library. This makes users confident about library staff. 2. Library Instruction. To provide instructions that how to use information services, information tools. It helps users how to select, get and use specific information sources. 3. Bibliographic Instruction. Bibliographic instruction guides users how to access and use both printed and online materials. This is concerned with information retrieval and exploiting information resources to the maximum extent21 Page OBJECTIVES OF USER EDUCATION a.
