Uphill and Downhill Motion Problems

Problem 1: Hiking Trip

A hiker walked uphill at a speed of 2 km/h and then returned along the
same path at a speed of 6 km/h. The entire trip took 8 hours. Find the
distance the hiker traveled.

Problem 2: Cycling Uphill and Downhill

On a bicycle, Ivan rides uphill at half the speed and downhill at twice the
speed compared to a flat road. Which will he do faster - descend and then
climb back up the hill, or ride an equivalent distance on a flat road?

Problem 3: Visiting Friends

Vasya and Petya live in the mountains and visit each other. They climb
uphill at 3 km/h and descend at 6 km/h. Vasya calculated it takes him 2
hours 30 minutes to reach Petya's house and 3 hours 30 minutes to return.
What is the distance between their houses?

Problem 4: Turtles Race

Three turtles – Sonya, Monya, and Tonya – compete in a 30-meter race.

They start simultaneously. When Sonya finishes, Monya has 10 meters left,
and Tonya is 4 meters ahead of Monya. How far from the finish line will
Monya be when Tonya finishes, assuming constant speeds?

Problem 5: Bridge Crossing

A pedestrian had crossed 2/5 of a bridge when he noticed a cyclist

approaching from behind. He turned back and met the cyclist at the start of
the bridge. If he had continued forward, the cyclist would have caught him
at the end of the bridge. By what factor is the cyclist’s speed greater than
the pedestrian’s speed?
Problem 6: Parrot’s Flight

Ilya and Dima decided to ride their bikes and took their parrot Kesha with
them. When Ilya had traveled 1 km, Dima and Kesha started. Kesha flew
between the boys until Dima caught up with Ilya, then rested on Ilya's
shoulder. How far did Kesha fly if his speed was 500 m/min, Ilya's speed
was 200 m/min, and Dima's speed was 250 m/min?

Problem 7: Bridge and Car

A cyclist had crossed 3/7 of a bridge when he noticed a car approaching

from behind. He turned back and met the car at the start of the bridge. If he
had continued forward, the car would have caught him at the end of the
bridge. By what factor is the cyclist’s speed less than the car’s speed?

Problem 8: Dog’s Run

After running 3/8 of the length of a bridge, a dog noticed a car approaching
at 60 km/h. If the dog runs back, it meets the car at the start of the bridge; if
it runs forward, the car catches it at the end of the bridge. What is the dog's
running speed?

Problem 9: Runner and Cyclist

A runner had crossed a quarter of a bridge when he noticed a cyclist

approaching. To avoid a collision on the narrow bridge, he could return to
meet the cyclist at the start of the bridge or continue forward and be caught
at the end. By what factor is the cyclist’s speed greater than the runner’s
speed?
Problem 10: Motorcycle and Car

From two cities 400 km apart, a motorcycle and a car set out towards each
other and met after 4 hours. Determine the car’s speed, knowing it is three
times the motorcycle’s speed.

Problem 11: Motorcycle and Car Speeds

From two cities 600 km apart, a motorcycle and a car set out towards each
other and met after 5 hours. Determine their speeds, knowing the car's
speed is twice that of the motorcycle.
