 HOW TO MAKE A HERBARIUM

C
Herbarium, or a collection of preserved plant specimens, is a basic tool of study for
any aspiring herbalist. No amount of book study can replace the field experience of
foraging and preservation of plants, especially combined with observation in their
natural habitat.

When encountering a new plant, provided it is not rare, endangered or under pro-
tection, take note of its habitat, size, and form, as well as the exact location and the
date of harvesting. Make sure that your foraging attempt will not hurt the other
specimens, as the goal of a herbarium is to preserve, not cause destruction. Do not
gather any, if it would remove the species completely from the location, and always
get the owner’s permission before harvesting on private land.

For your herbarium, pick a specimen that feels representative for the species; do not
choose the biggest, the smallest, the prettiest, or the most diseased. Do not remove
any parts of the plant to make it more aesthetically pleasing—dry leaves or dead
flowers also deserve preserving in the herbarium.

If possible, gather the whole plant, including the root. Multiple trips to the same
location might be necessary to collect the specimens at different times, as flowers,
fruits, and seeds are rarely available on the same day. For trees and bushes, gather
the parts suitable for preservation in a herbarium, ie. leaves, flowers, and possibly
fruits or seeds, as well as include sketches or photographs of the plant structure to
make future identification easier.

Collect the plants on a dry day, after morning dew has evaporated. Do not collect wet
plants as they are more susceptible to rot during the drying process; aquatic plants
are, of course, an exception.

For a herbarium kept in a study or a library, use separate, large sheets of sturdy pa-
per. For a field herbarium meant as a convenient resource for a traveling herbalist, a
smaller size and a lighter paper are necessary compromises. Not all herbalists have
the privilege of having their personal, stationary laboratory, but it should never be
a reason to resign from the pleasure of creating a herbarium during one’s adventures
in the wilderness.

S Use a small spade, a hand trowel, or a spading fork to remove the whole plant
with the root.

S Remove any dirt, cobwebs, or pieces of other plants that have been collected at
the same time.

S Write down all pertinent information: date and location, as well as the ephemeral
qualities of the plant that can be removed or changed during the drying process,
like the color, scent, or taste.

S Pack every plant separately to avoid potential mix-ups.

S As soon as possible, place the collected specimens in a plant press. You can
build your own from two pieces of light wood with clasps, buckles, or rubber
bands that will keep them together.

S Arrange the specimen as flat as possible, preserving

its natural growth pattern. Strive to show as many
characteristics of the plant as possible, eg. turn
one of the leaves to show the underside.

S Place the plant between thin, absorbent sheets of

newspaper or blotting paper, preferably acid-free,
and with neutral pH. Coated, glossy paper is not
suitable, as it does not absorb water.

S Replace the paper as often as necessary until the

plant is completely dry.

S To protect the herbarium from insects and

disease, freeze the dried specimen for 2—4
days, then let it thaw in room temperature
before adding it to the collection.

S Place the specimen in your herbarium and

attach it with strips of paper glued to the
page. Do not use sticky tape and do not
glue the plants directly to the page.

S Write down all notes collected during

the foraging and study of the plant, as
well as its uses.
