2. Types of Plagiarism
- Copying (without quotation and source)
- Paraphrasing (summarizing work without citation)
- Patchwork (using author’s phrases without quotation and source)
- Unintentional (Incorrect citation)
- Intentional (Ignoring rules)
- Self-plagiarism (reuse own work that has already been done)
7. When to quote
- When the author expresses their idea clearly
- When author express a particularly original idea
- When we wish to illustrate the author's perspective such as well expressed opinion
that the paraphrase could not capture
8. Reference Style
- It is an established system of referencing with consistent rules
- It covers 2 elements: in-text citations such as footnotes / author-date citations &
reference list
- The researcher should not mix the reference style within one piece of writing as there
a wide range of referencing styles

In-text citation
- Always include the authors surname (family name) & the date of publication
- Work by 2 authors: Liong and Wong (2021) states that…
- Work by 3 authors: Liong et al. (2021)….
- Direct quote: (page number must be given)- As Liong (2021, p. 21)states that…
- When quote another source which was reported by another author (citation from
secondary source): Wong (cited in Liong, 2021, p. 21) states that….
FOODNOTE/ENDNOTE
- Each in-text citation is consecutively numbered and a corresponding numbered note,
containing publication information about the source, is provided at the foot of the page
or end of the chapter of the paper
- Numbering should be consecutive (1,2,3,4…) throughout the chapter/ paper
- Foodnotes are listed at the foot of the page on which the citation appears
- If there are too much citation to fit neatly at the foot of the pages, they should be listed
on a separate page at the end of the chapter as endnotes.
