1. What is Plagiarism?

- Copying any part of other's work

- Copying phrases and passages word-for-word without quotation marks and without a
reference to the author such as from book, journals or websites
- Cutting and pasting internet materials
- Using someone else’s result without permission
- Presenting other people’s designs and images as your own work
- Submit a piece of work that has already been submitted for assessment in another
course

2. Types of Plagiarism

- Paraphrasing (summarizing work without citation)
- Patchwork (using author’s phrases without quotation and source)
- Unintentional (Incorrect citation)
- Intentional (Ignoring rules)

3. Plagiarism can be committed intentionally/ unintentionally

Intentionally excuse:
the pressure of meeting deadlines, feeling overworked, compensating for actual
academic or language deficiencies
Unintentionally excuse:
sloppy note-taking, insufficient paraphrasing and ineffective proofreading

4. When do we need to give credit

- When we use another person’s idea or theory
- When we use any facts/statistics/graphs from another source
- When we use any piece of information that are not common knowledge
- When we use quotations of another person's actual spoken or written word
- When we paraphrase another person's spoken or written words

5. Way to avoid plagiarism

- Direct Quotation:
Use quotation marks around the original authors direct words and cite the reference
when we use the exact word, idea or image of another person to quote the authors
- Paraphrasing:
Change the word without changing the original meaning when we take someone else
concepts and cite the reference
- Note taking:
When doing note taking, we should always record all the reference information
correctly, use quotation mark exactly as in the original, paraphrase correctly and
clearly distinguish our own idea from the ideas of other authors.
6. When to paraphrase
- when using an idea or data from a source such as a journal or book
(paraphrase let our reader understand our point of view and see our way of putting the
ideas together)

7. When to quote
- When the author expresses their idea clearly
- When author express a particularly original idea
- When we wish to illustrate the author's perspective such as well expressed opinion
that the paraphrase could not capture

8. Reference Style
- It is an established system of referencing with consistent rules
- It covers 2 elements: in-text citations such as footnotes / author-date citations &
reference list
- The researcher should not mix the reference style within one piece of writing as there
a wide range of referencing styles
