BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
(Common to EEE, CSE, IT, ITE)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 75
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
1. a) Explain ohm’s law. Find the current in 60Ω using KCL equations in the
given circuit shown in figure 1

b) Three resistors: R1=5Ω, R2=10Ω, R3=15Ω are connected in parallel across a DC voltage
Source: 100V. Find the currents I1, I2, I3 through R1, R2, R3 and the total current supplied
by 100V source. [10+5]

2.a) State Thevinin’s theorem? Find Vth and Rth in the given circuit between load (5 ohms)
terminals
b) Find the value of ‘v’ in the circuit below using Norton’s theorem [10+5]

3. a) A series R-L circuit has resistance of 20Ω and inductance of 0.02H. If the net impedance of
the given circuit is 40 Ω, find and the frequency of the circuit.
b) Find RMS value, Average value of AC voltage shown in figure below.
If T=2sec and A=1V [5+10]

4. a) A voltage V(t)=200sinωt is applied to a series RLC circuit where R=60Ω, L=0.18mH


and C=20μF. Find:
i) The power supplied by the source
ii) The reactive power supplied by the source
iii) The reactive power of the capacitor
iv) The reactive power of the inductor and
v) The power factor of the circuit.
b) A coil of resistance 5 ohms and inductance 120mH in series with 100uf capacitor, is connected
to a 300V, 50 Hz supply, Calculate

i) The current flowing in resistor

ii) Phase difference between voltage and current

iii) The voltage across the coil and voltage across the capacitor [10+5]

5 a) Explain the operation of an auto transformer with a neat diagram and derive the expression
for the saving of copper by using auto transformer compared to the two winding transformer

b) What are the different type’s connections of 3-phase Transformers? [10+5]

6. a)Explain the working principles of Synchronous generator.


b) A 6 pole, 3-ø induction motor runs at 1140 rpm on full load when supplied from a 60Hz
supply. Determine the synchronous speed and slip at full load. [10+5]

7. a) Explain various speed control methods of separately excited dc motor.

b) What are the various losses occurs in the three phase induction motor in their operation [8+7]

8. a) What is ELCB? Explain the working principle of ELCB.

b) Calculate total energy consumed per day Also calculate the cost of energy at Rs 2/- per unit

for one month by the use of following loads:

i) 5 number of 40 W lights operated 5 hours per day


ii) 1 h.p. motor is operated 2 hours per day
iii) 1 k.W heater is operated 1 hour per day
iv) 1 computer is used for 6 hours per day with printer about 30 minutes. [8+7]
