Section-A
A. Attempt all the parts. (10x2 =20)

1. Define bandwidth and quality factor for series resonant circuit.


2. Define phase sequence as referred to three phase supply.
3. Can an ideal current source be converted to an ideal voltage source?
4. Differentiate between unilateral and bilateral network.
5. Define reluctance and Flux density in magnetic circuit.
6. Mention four advantages of auto transformer over two winding transformers.
7. What is the value of slip in a synchronous motor?
8. How the direction of rotation of a 3-phase induction motor is changed?
9. Why the water is poured in earthing pit time to time?
10. Why earth pin is thicker and bigger than line and neutral pin in a 3 pin plug?

Section-B
B. Attempt Any three. (3x10 = 30)

11. (i) Differentiate between linear and non-linear elements. (3)

(ii) Find the current flowing through 10 Ω resistance using superposition theorem in the circuit
shown below: (7)
12. Define Thevenin’s theorem. (3)

Using Norton’s theorem, calculate the current in the 5 Ω resistor in the circuit shown in Fig.1

13. A resistor and a capacitor are in series with a variable inductor. When the circuit is connected to a
200 V, 50 Hz supply, the maximum current obtainable by varying the inductance is 0·314 A, the
voltage across the capacitor is then 300 V. Find the value of circuit elements.

14. In the parallel circuit shown in the figure below, find


(i) Branch Currents (ii) Power consumed by the complete circuit
15. (a) In a 1-phase, 100 KVA, 1100/440 V, 50 Hz transformer maximum efficiency is 96% occurs at
75% of full load and 0.8 p.f. lagging. Find the efficiency of transformer at half of full load and 0.6
p.f. lagging.

(b) Define voltage regulation and derive expression of voltage regulation for a lagging power
factor load.

C. Attempt all the parts. (5x10 = 50)

16. Attempt any one

a) Explain, Double revolving field theory as applied to single phase induction motor? Also explain
any one method of starting the motor.

b) (i) Derive the torque equation of a dc motor.


(ii) A 4-pole shunt generator with lap-connected armature has field and armature resistance of
50Ω and 0.1Ω respectively. It supplies power to twenty, 100W lamps at 200 V. Calculate the
armature current and the generated emf. Consider a contact drop of 1V per brush.

17. Attempt any one

b) Why three phase synchronous motor is not self-starting? Explain any one method of starting
this motor?

c) Draw the torque slip characteristics of Three phase induction motor.


A 3-phase, 50Hz induction motor has 6 poles and operates with a slip of 4% at a certain load.
Determine
(i) The speed of rotor with respect to the stator.
(ii) The frequency of the rotor current.
(iii) The speed of the rotor magnetic field with respect to the stator magnetic field.
(iv) The speed of the rotor magnetic field with respect to rotor.

18. Attempt any one

a) What is the need of earthing. Also discuss any one method of earthing in detail.
b) (i) Write short note on Li-ion Battery.
(ii) A battery has taken charging current of 6.3A for 24 hours at a voltage 2.1 V, while
discharging it gave a current of 4.5A for 24 hour at an average voltage of 1.35 V. Calculate
watt hour efficiency of the battery.
Calculate the energy consumption per day in a house using 6 tube lights of 20W each, 2 fans
of 80W each and 4 CFLs of 10W each for 6hours a day.

19. Attempt any one

a) Explain different types of wires and cables?

b) Explain the working of MCB and ELCB with suitable diagram.

20. Attempt any one

a) (i) Derive the emf equation of a transformer


(ii) Discuss the different types of connections of 3-phase transformer.

b) (i) Draw the phasor diagram of a transformer for inductive load.


(ii) Draw the exact equivalent circuit of the transformer.
