CONDITION ASSESSMENT OF BUILDING CONCRETE STRUCTURES USING NDTs -CASE STUDY
Bengin M A Herki
The quality of concrete and serviceability for three old buildings utilizing non-destructive testing
(NDT) method of rebound hammer (RH) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) was assessed in the
present study. Identification, classification and evaluation of in-situ concrete have helped us to
decide whether these three buildings need to be repaired and in result extent their service life
or it is not acceptable for its intended usage and they need to be demolished. To evaluate the
level of deterioration in historical and fire-damaged buildings or infrastructures, non-destructive
testing (NDT) methods can be used. In fact, NDT method employs inspection techniques to
evaluate engineering properties to see if it is acceptable for its intended usage that does not
need specimens to be crushed like the destructive testing method. The NDT method of rebound
hammer (RH) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) in combination with conventional methods
such as internal and external visual inspection and concrete color change to locate deterioration
was used to evaluate the quality of concrete structures for three old buildings. According to the
results obtained the RH and UPV can be used as reliable tools to predict the mechanical
properties of concrete structures subjected to fire and/or weathering deterioration. In addition,
combining the two NDTs decreased inaccuracies caused by utilizing one method alone to
evaluate concrete quality.

Structures built in India throughout the early 1970s and late 1980s are found to be in bad
condition due to weak specifications and poor building procedures. Continuous monitoring of
concrete structures using appropriate NDT (Non Destructive Testing) technologies and the use of
feasible restoration procedures aid in a significant decrease in the rate of degradation of
concrete structures, extending their life lifetime. In analysing the uniformity, homogeneity,
approximate compressive strength, durability, the level of rebar corrosion in concrete, and other
properties of damaged buildings, NDT technologies have a significant benefit. The goal of this
research is to extend the life of a 50-year-old commercial structure in Hyderabad (partly RC and
brick masonry). The findings of the condition evaluations are reported in this publication, which
include a visual, field, and laboratory examination of samples gathered from the structure. The
document also discusses how to measure the strength and durability of concrete in order to
determine the amount of the building's distress and damage. Aside from visual inspection,
nondestructive evaluations such as UPV and Rebound Hammer values, Half Cell Potential, and
chemical tests on chosen undamaged RC columns, beams, and slabs are also shown and
discussed. To extend the life of the structure, repair and strengthening procedures employing
the most upto-date materials, as well as feasible restoration works such as column jacketing,
shotcreting, anticorrosive coatings, and so on, have been recommended.
Condition Assessment of Existing Concrete Building Using Non- Destructive Testing Methods for
Effective Repair and Restoration-A Case Study
Buildings constructed during early 70's & late 80's of the last century in India are found to be in
distressed conditions due to inadequate specifications and poor construction practices. The
continuous monitoring of concrete structures using suitable NDT (Non Destructive Testing)
methods and use of possible restoration methods help in a considerable reduction of the rate of
deterioration of concrete structures thereby increasing the life span of structures. NDT methods
have greater advantage in evaluating the uniformity, homogeneity, approximate compressive
strength, durability, the extent of corrosion of rebars in concrete etc. of damaged structures. The
objective of the present study is to enhance the life of 50 year old existing hospital building
(Partly RC and Brick masonry) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Condition assessments are carried out
through a visual, field and laboratory evaluation of samples collected from the structure and
results are presented in this paper. The paper also highlights the assessment of strength and
durability of concrete to evaluate the extent of distress and damage in the building. Besides
visual inspection, the Non Destructive Evaluation covering UPV & Rebound Hammer values and
Half Cell Potential with respect to the status of corrosion of reinforcing bars and chemical tests
on selected un-distressed RC columns, beams, and slabs are also presented and discussed. The
repair and strengthening techniques using the latest materials and possible restoration works
such as column jacketing, shotcreting, anticorrosive coatings, etc. have been suggested to
enhance the life of the structure.

Review Paper on Non-Destructive Testing and Their Accuracies to Measure the Mechanical
Properties of Concrete
mohamed abdi
This paper aims to respond to these concerns through the identification and explanation of the
most popular and effective NDT approaches in concrete structures and also their accuracies. The
fundamentals of the non-destructive test methods are discussed in terms of their capacity,
limits, inspection techniques and interpretations. Factors that affect the performance of NDT an
approach are discussed and means of mediate their influence was suggested. Ultrasonic pulse
velocity and SONREB methods of Non-destructive test are showed in this paper as past
experiments of NDT. NDT of concrete was found to be increasingly recognized as a way of
measuring the strength, integrity, resilience and other properties of existing concrete structures,
Perceptions of NDT inadequacy are attributed to lack of knowledge of the building materials and
the NDT approaches themselves. The goal of this paper is to resolve these issues reviewing some
articles already done and defining and discussing the most co...
