Grammar
What is conjunction?
• Joining words
• Used to join sentences, words, phrases and clauses
• 10 categories based on its function
1. Show similarity or close relationship
• Conjunctions: and
/ as well as / not only… but also /
besides / also / both…and …
• Examples:
• Jack and Jill went up the hill.
• Connor is smart as well as handsome.
• Besides reading, she likes listening to music.
• The boy is not only rude but also naughty.
• His credit card is also missing.
• Both my father and my mother did not attend the piano recital.
2. Show contrast (difference)
• Conjunctions: but / still / though / although /
yet
• Examples:
• Sherry is smart but lazy.
• The boy passed his exams with flying colours. Still, his parents
were not happy.
• Although / though it was raining, the game was not
cancelled.
• Mrs Goh’s leg is in a cast yet she moves around on her own.
3. Show condition
• Conjunctions: Unless / or else
• Examples:
• She will fail her exam unless she works harder.
• The little boy must apologise or else his mother
will punish him.
4. Show purpose of an action
• Conjunctions: so that / in order to
• Examples:
• The farmer worked hard so that his harvest
would be plentiful.
• The businessman worked day and night in order
to make money.
5. Show action or events that happens at
the same time
• Conjunctions: as / when /while
• Examples:
• She pulled her coat tighter as the wind blew harder.
• When she heard the good news, she jumped for joy.
• While I was cooking dinner, the gas went out.
6. To express choice
• Conjunctions: Or / Either … or
• Examples:
• Would you like to play indoor or outdoor
games?
• Either my father or my mother will attend the
meeting.
7. To show similarity in the idea
• Conjunctions: Neither … nor (negative) / Both
… and (positive)
• Examples:
• Neither Jack nor Wendy was involved in the accident.
• Both Miss Molly and Mr Chan are teachers.
8. Show result of an action
• Conjunctions: So / Therefore / Consequently/ As a result
• Examples:
• I felt sick so I went to see the doctor.
• She was late for class, therefore she had to stand outside.
• They could not pay the rent. Consequently, they were kicked out of
the apartment.
• It was raining heavily. As a result, the people were evacuated to higher
ground.
9. Show reason for the action
• Conjunctions: As / Because / For/ Since
• Examples:
• As it was a holiday, they went to watch a movie.
• She did not sit for the exam because she was sick.
• Don’t disturb father as he is busy working.
• Our headmistress will not be here since she is sick.
10. Show the contrary of a statement
or belief
• Conjunctions: nevertheless/ in spite of
• Examples:
• They often bicker at each other. Nevertheless,
they are still best friends.
• Harry still went to meet the evil Lord Voldemort
in spite of knowing that it would cost him his life.
