AC15 - Cadrys Cleaning & Care
With a minimum amount of care and effort, a good quality handmade rug will provide many years of lasting
quality. Cadrys are always pleased to advise on any specific, care and maintenance issues and can provide
expert washing, restoration and valuation services.
As a rule it is important to avoid direct sunlight, for any prolonged periods of time as this may cause fading and
affect the tones in the rug. To safeguard the overall condition of your carpet you should rotate its position from
time to time, so that no particular area of the carpet is subjected to continued excessive use.
VACCUMING
Although excessive vacuuming with a powerful machine can be harmful, a regular vacuuming (once to twice a
week) will remove any in ground, grit and dust that may have penetrated the pile. When cleaning smaller,
lighter rugs, these can be given a quick shake first to loosen and remove excessive grit, dirt and dust.
Vacuum the carpet from different directions. Although the need may not be visible, this frequent and regular
vacuuming will increase carpet life by preventing soil build-up, and will help eliminate stains caused when spilled
liquids dissolve soil accumulations.
Vacuuming Bound Rugs: When vacuuming bound area rugs, take special care with the binding border. Do not let
the vacuum sit on top of the binding or catch the corner of the rug as it could damage the binding. Also, vacuum
in the direction that the binding is sewn so as not to pull up the binding from the rug.
WASHING
WOOL
As most hand knotted rugs are pure wool, they can be professionally washed. Generally it is recommended
every 3-5 years depending on the degree of use, condition and soiling. Please note: The washing process will
generally not remove stains; stain removal can be advised on and quoted for on an individual basis after
inspection, by a qualified Cadrys staff member.
HANDTUFTED RUGS
These rugs require particular cleaning methods and should be discussed with Cadrys, prior to any treatment.
NATURAL FIBRE RUGS eg Jute
Natural fibre floor coverings are relatively easy to maintain because dirt does not cling to the hard fibres, but
rests loosely in the weave. Natural fibres do not show dirt readily.
Never steam clean or wet-shampoo a natural fibre floor covering. For more information about cleaning spots
and spills, read below.
Jute rugs do not like to get wet, so do not place a Jute rug where there is high moisture. Jute rugs are for indoor
use, do not use outdoors as the weather and humidity can cause Jute rugs to break down.
Generally an occasional airing of your carpet in the fresh air and sun should help alleviate most insect and
mildew problems. Should you find moth larvae we suggest that you immediately vacuum the infected areas
thoroughly, and ring Cadrys to arrange professional cleaning.
Stains can generally be avoided by acting quickly using the basic advice below:
SOLIDS
Before attempting any cleaning scoop, spilled matter with a spoon and/or absorbent paper towel or white cloth,
and then treat same as liquid spill.
LIQUID SPILLS
Spot clean with a white hand towel (wet and rung out) and a small amount of mild soap.
RED WINE
Immediately pack the affected area with salt to draw out the liquid, leave for 3 minutes and then vacuum. Flush
rinse with soda water or tepid water as salt is hydroscopic and will remove moisture but will NOT remove the
stain completely – flush the area with soda water or tepid water and blot with paper towel, both on top and
under the rug, stand on the area and using the balls of your feet to firmly blot. Repeat process until the towel
shows only water!
Do not use any cleaners on your Natural Jute Rugs, as most will cause the natural colour to bleach out and ruin
the appearance of your Natural Jute Rugs.
Immediately remove any spills by blotting (blot do not rub) liquids with a white cloth or scrape up solids with a
dull knife or nail file and then vacuum the area thoroughly. Never rub the area of the spill. Rubbing can work the
liquid deeper into the fibres, making the spill more likely to stain the carpet. It can also spread the liquid to a
larger area of the rug.
For red wine and tomato sauce, dab with a white cloth dampened with club soda to neutralize the spill and
remove any possible stain. Let dry. Many times the stain disappears. If not, try cleaning with a cloth dampened
with mild soap.
If a rug has been very wet, clean and rinse, then dry with white absorbent towels or paper towels. If still very
damp you may finish drying with a hairdryer to assist the process. Place an object under the rug such as a phone
book to elevate the rug and allow the air to circulate
CAUTION
Aggressive rubbing will cause pile distortion and may adversely affect your carpets pile once dry.
STORAGE
When storing carpets for any period longer than a week it is preferable to roll rugs up and not to fold them. DO
NOT wrap in plastic as this may cause moisture & condensation to occur. Wrap your rug in paper or an old bed
sheet so that it can breathe, you might want to sprinkle naphthalene, camphor or cedar wood shavings to deter
moths, although this does have limited effectiveness. Avoid storage in damp areas as this can lead to mildew
and can attract insects, such as moths and silverfish. In order to avoid insect damage a stored rug will need to
be unrolled and inspected, and then vacuumed and aired every 6 months.
