Planning in sports

Planning

Meaning : Planning is the process of putting thoughts together and organising activities required to
achieve a desired goal.

Objectives of planning:
1. To reduce unnecessary pressure of immediacy
2. To maintain a good control over all the activities
3. To facilitate proper coordination
4. To reduce the chances of mistakes
5. To increase efficiency
6. To enhance creativity
7. To enhance sports performance

Various committees and their responsibilities

Types of commitees

1. Publicity commitee
2. Transport commitee
3. Boarding and lodging commitee
4. Decoration and ceremony commitee
5. Grounds and equipment commitee
6. Commitee for refreshments and Entertainment
7. Reception commitee
8. Commitee on entries and programmes
9. Commitee for officials

Pre During and post Responsibilities

Pre

1. To prepare budget of the tournament


2. To prepare the schedule of sports tournament
3. To prepare field and sports equipment
4. To form various commitee
5. To send information to various teams
6. To make neccessary arrangements regarding boarding and lodging
7. To arrange prizes and certificates
8. To send entry forms to various institution and collect them on time

Tournament

Defination: Tournament is a series of sports in which one team finally wins among many different
teams

Importance

1. Development of sports skills


2. Propaganda of sports
3. Helpful in selection of players
4. Development of national and international Integration
5. Development of social qualities
6. Source of recreation

Types of tournaments

1. Knockout tournaments : only one chance

Advantages :
• less expensive
• less time taking
• lesser number of officials required
• imporves the quality of sport as a team gives its best to win

Disadvantages:
• chances that good teams might get eliminated
• more chances of weak teams reaching the final round
• Spectators might loose intrest if weak teams reach finals

2. League or round robin tournament: Each team plays every other team at least once
• Single league tournament : Teams plays another team once n(n-1)/2
• Double leauge tournament: Teams play another team twice n(n-1)
Advantages:
• only deserving teams gain victory
• Every teams gets max opportunities
• sport can be made popular due to max number of games
• Sports officials can choose winner efficeintly
• a team need not wait against the other team for playing a match
• ample of opprtunities are there for players to improve thier performance
• The spectators get good number of games to watch

Disadvantages:
• More time
• More money
• Teams coming from far face more problems and more time and money is taken
• More number of officials required
• Moral of most teams becomes low due to continous defeats and are unable to perform well

3. Combination tournament

Procedure to draw fixtures

Knockout

No. Of byes = nearest power of 2 – total number of teams

Upper half = (N + 1)/2 Number of byes in upper half = (NB – 1)/2


Lower half = (N-1)/2 Number of byes in lower half = (NB+1)/2

• 1st bye : Last team of lower half


• 2nd bye : First team of upper half
• 3rd bye: First team of lower half
• 4th bye: Last team of upper half
• Next byes will be given in the same order

Number of matches in a knock out tournament : N – 1

Number of rounds in a knock out tournament : Taken wrt to the next highest power of 2

If there are many teams, halfes are again divided into two with adding extra teams first in 1st
quarter, 3rd, 2nd and finally 4th.

Fixture: schedule of teams taking part in the tournament

Seeding: Seeding is given to those teams who r runner ups from last tournament.
Special seeding : In this kind of seeding, players are brought stright away to quaterfinals

Consolation tournament

First type: Each team get 2 oppurtunities

Second type: Teams defeated in all the rounds are given an additional opportunity to take part in the
competition

Seeding method

Strong teams are selected to keep them at appropriate place in the fixture. For this the organisers
should be aware of the previous performance of the teams.

Special seeding method

Selected players directly enter the quater final or semi final.

Procedure of fixture in a league or round robin tournament.

Cyclic Method: Team number 1 is fixed on the top of the right hand side and then move other team
number in asecnding order.

If the team number is odd a bye is added to the top right corner and the same procedure continues

Staircase Method: no byes are given in this method

Method of deciding the winner in a league tournament

1. British method : {(Total points obtained) / (Total possible points)} * 100


2. American method : {(Matches won)/(Matches played)}* 100
