Lesson Plan On The Elements of Fiction
Lesson Plan On The Elements of Fiction
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and define various elements, techniques, and literary devices in fiction.
2. Analyze the impact and significance of different literary devices on the overall meaning and interpretation of
a text.
3. Apply knowledge of literary devices to enhance reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
1. Demonstrate understanding of literary elements and devices. (DepEd SHS English Curriculum Guide, p. 39)
2. Analyze the structure and elements of fiction. (DepEd K-12 Curriculum Guide – English, p. 45)
3. Apply knowledge of literary devices in interpreting texts. (DepEd SHS English Curriculum Guide, p. 41)
4. Use different literary devices effectively in writing. (DepEd K-12 Curriculum Guide – English, p. 48)
Procedure:
1. Engage students by asking them to brainstorm different elements, techniques, and literary devices they are
familiar with in fiction. Write their responses on the board.
1. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a short story or an excerpt from a novel.
2. Instruct each group to identify and discuss as many elements and techniques of fiction as they can find in the
given text. Encourage them to pay attention to elements like plot, setting, characters, point of view, and
techniques such as foreshadowing, symbolism, and irony.
3. After analyzing the text, have each group present their findings to the class and engage in a discussion about
the different elements and techniques they identified.
4. Facilitate the discussion by asking questions like: How does the setting contribute to the overall mood of the
story? How does the author use foreshadowing to create suspense? How does the characterization impact
the reader's understanding of the story?
2. Instruct students to individually read and identify at least three different literary devices used in the given
passage. Examples of literary devices include simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, etc.
3. After identifying the literary devices, have students discuss their findings in pairs. Encourage them to explain
the effect of each device on the reader's understanding and interpretation of the passage.
4. Engage the whole class in a discussion to share their findings and insights. Encourage them to provide
examples from the text to support their analysis.
5. As an extension, challenge students to create their own short passages incorporating specific literary devices.
This will allow them to practice applying the devices creatively.
Activity 3: Interactive Literary Device Gallery Walk (40 minutes)
1. Set up different stations around the classroom, each focusing on a specific literary device (e.g., one station
for simile, another for metaphor, etc.).
2. Assign each student a station and provide them with examples of the assigned literary device.
3. Instruct students to create visual representations or posters that showcase their assigned literary device.
They can use images, quotes, or illustrations to demonstrate the meaning and impact of the device.
4. After students have completed their posters, have them rotate around the classroom, visiting each station to
learn about the other literary devices.
5. Encourage students to interact with the posters, ask questions, and provide feedback to their peers about
the clarity and creativity of their representations.
6. Conclude the activity with a reflection and discussion on the significance of each literary device and how it
contributes to the richness and depth of fiction.
1. Review the main elements, techniques, and literary devices discussed throughout the lesson.
2. Connect the learning objectives back to the students' own writing and reading comprehension skills,
highlighting the importance of understanding and applying literary devices in analyzing and appreciating
fiction.
3. Assign a short writing task where students are required to identify and explain the use of specific literary
devices in a given text.
Assessment:
4. Completion and quality of the written task that requires identifying and explaining the use of specific literary
devices.
Note: The specific alignment to the Standards for the State Philippines will depend on the selected text and the
literary devices emphasized in the activities. Make sure to select texts and examples that align with the relevant
standards.
