END OF TERM II EXAMINATIONS

S.5 APPLIED MATHEMATICS (P425/2)
TIME: 2 HOURS

INSTRUCTIONS
- All questions are to be attempted.
- Show all the working clearly.
- For numerical work take g = 9.8ms-2

1. A and B are mutually exclusive events such that P (A) = 0.3

P(B) = 0.5. Find;
(i) P A  B  (5 marks)
(ii) PA1  B1 

2. Two forces (4i + 3j)N and (-4i – 3j)N act at points whose position
vectors are (6i + 3j)m and (3i – j)m respectively. Show that the forces
reduce to a couple and find the moment of the couple. (5 marks)

3. A bag contains 4 white, 3 black and 1 red ball. Two balls are picked in
succession at random without replacement. Find the probability that;
(i) both are of the same colour.
(ii) atleast one black is picked. (5 marks)

4. A random variable X has a p.d.f f(x) given as;

X -1 0 1
P(X = x) a ½ b

Where a and b are the probability of Px  1 and P X  1 respectively.

Given that E x   .
1
6
(i) determine the values of a and b.
(ii) P x  0  (5 marks)

5. The diagram below shows bodies A, B and C of masses 2m, m and m
respectively with A and B lying on smooth planes of inclination 300 and
C hanging freely.

 
A C B

C
300 300

If the strings are inelastic and the system rests in equilibrium, show that;
(i) Sin  2Sin
(ii) Cos  2Cos  2 (6 marks)

Events A and B are such that P A  , PB   and P A B   . Find;

6.
2 8 12
(i) P A  B 
(ii) 
P B A1  (4 marks)

7. ABCDEF is a regular hexagon. Forces of 3N, 4N, 8N, 2N and 6N act in

the directions AF, FE, ED, CD, and AB respectively. Find the magnitude
of their resultant and its inclination to AB where AB is horizontal.
(5 marks)
8. A uniform road AB of mass M hangs vertically with end A freely hinged
to a fixed point. The road is pulled aside by a horizontal force F, applied
at B until it makes an angle of 300 with the down ward vertical. Show
Mg
that; F  . (5 marks)

9. The following distribution is of mass (out of 100) obtained from a certain

examination paper.
Marks 35 - < 40 40 - < 50 50 - < 65 65 - < 70
Frequency 2 15 12 3

Draw a histogram for the data. Hence find the modal mark. (5 marks)

10. Forces 1N, 4N, 3N and 6N act along sides AB, CB, DC, and AD
respectively of a square of side am. Given that the directions of the forces
are as indicated by the order of the letters. Find the equation of the line of
action of the resultant force. (5 marks)
