WIND FARMS SUITABILITY

In assessing a suitable site for a wind farm, different factors should be considered.
In this study, Multi-Criteria Decision Making and Geographic Information System (GIS)
will be used to assess the different factors in choosing the best site for wind farms.

FACTORS USED FOR LAND SUITABILIT ASSESSMENT

a. Wind Speed
One of the most important bases in Wind Power Plants is Wind Speed. The higher the wind
speed within the prescribed ranges indicates higher power output. According to Zalhaf et.al.
(2021), the threshold values for wind speed have different values by the previous
researcher. In this study, the range for acceptable wind speed should not be lesser than 3
m/s and greater than 20 m/s. If the wind speed is lower than the prescribed speed, it will
result to unsuitable wind farm sitting and if it is higher, it can cause possible damage to the
wind turbines. For the data collection, wind speed is available in PAG-ASA and Global
Wind Atlas (https://globalwindatlas.info).

b. Slope
The accessibility of the wind farm is dependent on the slope of the project site. For the
slope, the acceptable range should be lower than 15%. If the slope is higher, the
convenience of the maintenance and installation will be highly affected and increases the
cost. Digital Elevation Model will be used to check the slope of the area.

c. Distance from Urban Areas

Wind farms produces noise and visual disturbances which have negative impacts to human
beings living in the urban and residential areas. In order to reduce the negative impacts of
the wind farms, a minimum distance from the urban and residential areas should be
considered. According to Tercan (2021), the suitable sites for wind farms should be >1km
from the residential areas.

d. Elevation
The elevation of the site affects the wind direction and speed. Highly elevated areas capture
more wind speed; thus, wind turbines are commonly installed on high elevated areas but
increases the cost due to difficulty of the installation and maintenance. Thus, the acceptable
elevation for a wind site should be 0m to 1250m. Digital Elevation map will be also used
in determining the elevation of the project site

e. Distance from Transmission Lines and Power Grid

The closeness of the transmission lines and power grid to the wind farm have a positive
and negative impact; hence, a minimum distance should take into consideration. Effect of
electromagnetic fields generated by the transmission lines have negative impact to human
health, on the other hand, the proximity of wind farms to transmission lines improves the
efficiency as it reduces the cost of constructing a new line near the project site. For the
distance, 0.5km should be considered from the wind farm to transmission lines.

f. Distance from Airports

The distance from airports should also be considered as aviation routes can affect the wind
turbines which can lead to collisions. Thus, the recommended distance from the airports
should be at least 3km.

g. Distance from Major Roads and Railways

It is cost efficient if the wind farm locations are near major road networks and railways for
the transportation and access for the employees. Moreover, the cost for the construction of
new roads will be minimizes. However, the noise from the wind turbines can cause loud
noises and will shadow the roads Thus the acceptable distance from the major roads to
wind farm should be 0.5km.

h. Lighting Strike Flash Rate

Lightning strike flash rate should be considered in finding a suitable place for a wind farm.
It can cause problems with electrical equipment and can damage the body of the wind
turbine. Wind turbines are usually placed in highly elevated and open locations; hence, it
is more prone to lighting strike. According to Said (2016), the acceptable value of lighting
strike flash rate annually is from 2.5 to 80 fl.km−2y−1.
