Lesson 5

Activity 1: Planning Tools

1. Forecasting

Yuna has a business which is selling Christmas decorations. She


decided to predict the sales of her decorations when the Christmas season
came. She analyzed her sales data from previous Christmas seasons, then,
came up with a prediction for her Christmas holiday demand. Yuna made sure
that she is using reliable data since that will directly influence the accuracy of
the forecast. Yuna believes that the sales of her Christmas decors would be
higher during the Christmas season than during regular days and previous
Christmas seasons.
Therefore, forecasting helped her to make decisions about the
future of her business. It reduces the costs associated with materials customers
do not buy. This planning tool also helped Yuna by reducing the cost since she
was able to foresight to not order more stock that will be wasted.

2. Scenario Planning

People like milk tea and most are trying it because it is famous.
DelighTEAful use different scenario to predict whether the sales of their milk tea
will increase or decrease, depending on the trend. Maybe it will trend more or
became out of date. Thus, DelighTEAful scenario plan becoming popular since
the people love their products. They also think of having new promos. They also
predict that if the popularity of milk tea be gone, their business might become
outdated. DelighTEAful also come up with milk tea becoming one of the reason
of plastic waste.
Clearly, constructing numerous scenarios helps in testing out the
potential results of the predictions. It helps them forecast their sales and their
future investments. They can now manage risks by evaluating the impact of
potential future events and situations. It can help DelighTEAful make better
decisions for their business.
3. Benchmarking

PM Mineral Water is a company of bottled mineral water, they have


a close competitor which is Best Water. The two companies have been looking
for a way to increase their sales. Hence, they compare and contrast their
strengths and weaknesses, identifying strategies for their products’
improvements or competitive advantages.
PM Mineral Water saw that Best Water have a promo in which their
bottle cap has a unique code that can lead to winning prizes given by the
company.
Therefore, PM Mineral Water had an idea for their business
because of the other company. They came up with having a QR Code at the
plastic of the bottled mineral water that can be scanned and have a raffle promo
in the end of the year.similar strategic prerogatives so that the strategist can
compare and contrast the two companies’ strengths and weaknesses,
identifying strategies for improvements or competitive advantage. In that way,
they are able to improve their performance. They are constantly watching and
benchmarking against each other.

Topics Things I learned

 Planning Tools  In planning, there are things needed


 Forecasting aside from planning process, these are
 Scenario Planning the planning tools that can help us on
 Benchmarking planning.
 Participatory and Contingency  Forecasting is like predicting the future

 Goal Setting  There’s an application called zero-sum
 Management by Objectives game. While reviewing this lesson, I
 SMART Goals searched what is this application since
I am not familiar with that app. Hence, I
discovered that this is where the result
is an advantage for one side and a loss
for the other side.
 It is good to close to your competitors.
Have a friendly competition and share
ideas for the success of both business.
 While performing the primary plan, we
should be creating a contingency plan
in case of failing at the previous plan.
 There’s a thing called SMART model
that desires a goal that are specific,
measurable, achievable, realistic, and
time-targeted.
 The seven planning tools in the lesson
was describe as the tools that provides
a strong framework for further
development of strategic
methodologies.
