TUTORIAL SHEET 4 (ASSIGNMENT 4)

Answer question 2, 3, 6, 11, 13 & 14 as Assignment 4 and submit through your

class reps on the due date highlighted below.
Due Date: 13 th August 2024 at 10:00hrs (Tuesday). (Chemistry Lab).

1. What is the wavelength of the yellow sodium emission, which has a frequency of 5.09 x 1014 Hz?

2. What is the frequency of violet light with a wavelength of 408 nm?

3. The red spectral line of lithium occurs at 671 nm. Calculate the energy of one photon of this light.

4. The energy required to dissociate the Cl2 molecule to Cl atoms is 239 kJ/mol Cl2. If the
dissociation of a Cl2 molecule were accomplished by the absorption of a single photon whose
energy was exactly the quantity required, what would be its wavelength (in meters)?

5. What is the wavelength of light emitted when the electron in a hydrogen atom undergoes a
transition from energy level n = 4 to level n = 2?

6. Calculate the wavelength (in meters) of the wave associated with a 1.00 kg mass moving at 1.00
km/hr.

7. An atom of a particular element is traveling at 1.00% of the speed of light. The de Broglie
wavelength is found to be 3.31 × 10-3 pm. Which element is this?

8. State whether each of the following sets of quantum numbers is permissible for an electron in an
atom. If a set is not permissible, explain why.
a. n = 1, l = 1, ml = 0, ms = +1/2
b. n = 3, l = 1, ml = -2, ms = -1/2
c. n = 2, l = 1, ml = 0, ms = +1/2
d. n = 2, l = 0, ml = 0, ms = 1
9. State the quantum numbers that are associated with the 4th electron of the fluorine atom.

10. What are the possible subshells when n = 2? How many orbitals are contained by each of these
subshells? How many electrons are contained by each of these subshells?

11. Write the electronic configuration and draw the orbital diagram of:
a. Ar
b. Cr
c. Cu
d. Mg2+
e. O2-

12. In each of the following atoms state the number of unpaired electrons.
a. Helium
b. Lithium
c. Magnesium

13. Arrange the following elements in order of increasing Electronegativity: I, F & Cl.

14. Arrange the following elements in order of increasing Atomic radius: Mg, Na, Al & Si.

15. Circle the atom in each pair that has the largest radius.
a. O or O2-
b. Mg or Mg2+

16. Consider the isoelectronic series O2-, F-, Na+ & Mg2+. Arrange these ions in order of increasing
ionic radius.

17. Write a chemical equation to represent the process associated with the first electron affinity for Cl.

18. Write chemical equations to represent the process associated with the first and second ionization
energy for Mg.
