The System 20/30/30 ALT is a family of rate based autopilots. Whereas the System 20 controls only the
roll axis of the aircraft, the System 30 controls both the roll and pitch axes, while the System 30 ALT
controls only the pitch axis. The roll and pitch modes of operation are:
Pitch Computer
Absolute Pressure Transducer
Pitch Servo
Altitude Hold ON/OFF Switch
The Turn Coordinator / Roll Computer, PN 01260-( )-( )-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-2. In accordance with
the selected roll mode, it processes inputs from either the internal command potentiometer, heading
system, or navigation receiver, to drive the roll servo until the roll error has been canceled.

The Pitch Computer, PN 01261-( )-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-3. It processes inputs from the absolute
pressure transducer and internal accelerometer, to drive the pitch servo until the pitch error has been
canceled.
The Directional Gyro, PN 6406-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-4. It supplies the heading error signal to the
turn coordinator / roll computer. The heading error is the error between the heading bug and the actual
aircraft heading.
The Horizontal Situation Indicator, PN 6443-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-5. It supplies the heading error
signal to the turn coordinator / roll computer. The heading error is the error between the heading bug
and the actual aircraft heading.
The Absolute Pressure Transducer, PN 0111, is shown in Fig. 1-6. It supplies the altitude signal to the
pitch computer.
The Roll Servo, PN 0105-( )-( ) or 0106-( )-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-7. Its capstan is coupled to the
ailerons by a mechanical linkage (typically bridle cable).
The Pitch Servo, PN 0107-( )-( ) or 0108-( )-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-8. Its capstan is coupled to
the elevator by a mechanical linkage (typically bridle cable). Internal trim sensors detect an out of trim
condition, and supply this information to the pitch computer.
The Altitude Hold ON/OFF Switch, PN 03905-( ), is shown in Fig. 1-9. It provides the means to
alternately engage and disengage the single pitch mode. In addition, its lamps indicate when that mode
is engaged, and an out of trim condition.
1.3.1 System 20
A heading system is optional. The autopilot system is configured to be compatible with a particular
heading system if one is installed, and to operate at a rated voltage (A+) of either 14 Vdc or 28 Vdc. Two
independent switches, each associated with a dedicated circuit breaker, apply power to the autopilot
system when closed. The Battery Master Switch applies power to the turn coordinator rate gyro, while
the Autopilot Master Switch applies power to the rest of the system. Such an arrangement preserves the
integrity of the turn coordinator section of the display, should the Autopilot Master Switch be opened or its
circuit breaker interrupted. Upon power-up, once the rate gyro reaches sufficient speed, the RDY lamp
becomes illuminated. However, should the rate gyro fail to reach sufficient speed, then the RDY lamp
remains extinguished indefinitely and no modes can be engaged. Once the RDY lamp becomes
illuminated, the selected roll mode may be engaged by sequentially actuating (pressing and releasing)
either the PUSH MODE Knob, or optional remote MODE SEL Switch located on the control wheel. The
actuation sequence is shown in Table 1-1a or Table 1-1b, depending on whether a heading system is
installed. When a particular roll mode is engaged, its respective mode lamp is illuminated. The autopilot
system is disconnected by pressing and holding the PUSH MODE knob for three seconds, or
just pressing the optional remote AP DISC switch located on the control wheel.
1.3.2 System 30
Upon power-up, the pitch computer executes a self-test. If it does not pass
this test, then the RDY lamp remains extinguished indefinitely and no modes can be engaged.
Otherwise, once the rate gyro reaches sufficient speed, the RDY lamp becomes illuminated. However,
should the rate gyro fail to reach sufficient speed, then the RDY lamp remains extinguished indefinitely
and no modes can be engaged. Once the RDY lamp becomes illuminated, the selected roll mode may be
engaged by sequentially actuating (pressing and releasing) either the PUSH MODE Knob, or optional
remote MODE SEL Switch located on the control wheel. The actuation sequence is shown in Table 1-1a
or Table 1-1b, depending on whether a heading system is installed. When a particular roll mode is
engaged, its respective mode lamp is illuminated. Thereafter, the single pitch mode, ALT HOLD, may be
engaged by pressing the remote ALT ENG/DSNG Switch located on the control wheel. When engaged,
its mode lamp is illuminated. In addition, the autopilot system will sense an out of trim condition, and
respond by illuminating either the UP TRIM lamp or DN TRIM lamp accordingly, thereby advising the pilot
to trim the aircraft in the appropriate direction. The pitch mode may be disengaged by simply pressing
the switch again. The autopilot system is disconnected by pressing and holding the PUSH MODE knob
for three seconds, or just pressing the optional remote AP DISC switch located on the control wheel.
The autopilot system is configured to operate at a rated voltage (A+) of either 14 Vdc or 28 Vdc. The
Altitude Hold Master Switch applies power to the autopilot system when closed. Upon power-up, the
pitch computer executes a self-test. If it does not pass this test, either the UP TRIM lamp or DN TRIM
lamp will remain illuminated indefinitely, and the ALT HOLD mode cannot be engaged. Otherwise, the
ALT HOLD mode may be engaged by pressing either the ALT HOLD ON/OFF Switch, or optional ALT
ENG/DSNG Switch located on the control wheel. This results in both the ALT lamp and ON lamp being
illuminated. In addition, the autopilot system will sense an out of trim condition, and respond
by illuminating either the UP TRIM lamp or DN TRIM lamp accordingly, thereby advising the pilot to trim
the aircraft in the appropriate direction. The ALT HOLD mode may be disengaged by simply pressing
either switch again.
a. Heading Error
polarity:
AC Heading Systems
A square wave that is 180º out of phase with the autopilot's AC Excitation, and centered about its Signal
