Improving Problem Solving Skills
Problem Solving (PS) Skills

In dealing with life’s problems, the most obvious course

of action is to tackle the problems head-on.
PS is a process of taking corrective action in order to
meet objectives.
It is a skill that is highly related to decision making skills
of an individual.
PS requires making decision & critical thinking.
Having good, strong problem solving skills can make a
huge difference to your personal life, study & career.

How do we solve problems?

1. Clarify the problem.
• You can’t solve a problem if you are not
sure what the problem is.
• Therefore, the first step in any PS is to
arrive at a concrete definition of a
problem.
• Focusing too much on the negative
feelings created by the problem & defining
the problem vaguely should be avoided.
How do we solve problems?

2. Generate alternative courses of

action or solutions
• Generate as many ideas as possible without thinking
much about their practicality. ( This is the place for
brainstorming if in a group)
• Refrain from applying the first action that comes to
mind thoughtlessly.
• Avoid on insisting on complete solutions as it might
stop you from taking any steps that improves your
situation.
How do we solve problems?

3. Evaluate & choose the best course of

action /solution
• Ask if each of the alternatives are realistic- avoid
foolish optimism & unnecessary pessimism.
• Consider any costs or risks associated with each
alternative
• Compare the desirability of the probable outcomes
of each alternatives.
How do we solve problems?

• Use your values as guidelines to make your

decision.
4. Take action while maintaining flexibility

• Put your decision into action.

• Avoid the success/failure dichotomy. Look for
improvement of any kind.
• Don’t get locked into a particular course of action.
It is alright to change your mind.
How do we solve problems?

5. Evaluate your action

• Remember that you can learn from your failures.
• You may get new information that will facilitate a
new attack on the problem. So, ask yourself
these questions:
• Were my actions effective?
• Did my decision solve the problem?
• If not, why? What can I do better next time?
Activity: Group problem solving

1. Form a group composed of 5 members.

2. Identify any problem that is very common in your community.
3. Using the following steps of PS propose a solution to the
problem you have identified-
A. Define the problem
B. Generate possible solutions (Brainstorm!)
C. Choose the best solution
D. Write down what challenges you anticipate in applying
this solution & how you intend to manage it.
