I.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the students CAN:

1. Describe a polygon
2. Identify the types of polygons
3. Create and recognize polygons by the number of sides.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic : Polygons and Different Types of Polygons

B. Time Allotment: 45 minutes
C. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Tangrams, Cut-outs Figures and Prices

III. PROCEDURES

Teacher's Activity Students Activity

A. Preliminary Activity
 Prayers
 Greetings : (Starts Praying)
Good morning class. Are you ready Good morning ma’am. Yes we are ready ma’am
for today’s discussion?
Ok, great.

 Classroom Arrangements:
But before we are going to start can (picking up some pieces of paper and right after
you please pick up some pieces of that they are seating appropriately)
papers under your chair, and after
that can please seat properly.

B. Activity
Before we start with our lesson, let’s have
first an activity.
Are you ready? Yes ma’am
I am going to divide you into four groups.
I have here an envelope, and inside of this
envelope is a different cut-out papers. So
your task is to assemble the cut-out
papers and explain to me what image you
see in the assembled cut-out papers.
Is it clear?
Yes ma’am.
C. Analysis

After the activity)

Did you had fun? Yes ma’am .
Congratulations to all of you. You are all a
very good observant.
In connection with our activity, what do
you think is our topic for today?
(Students are raising their hands)

Yes?
Yes, very good. Our topic for today is all
about Polygons and the different types of
polygons. Polygons ma’am.

So what is Polygons?

D. Abstraction

Polygon
A Polygon is a closed figure made up of
line segments (not curves) in a two-
dimensional plane. Polygon is the
combination of two words, i.e. poly
(means many) and gon (means sides).

A minimum of three line segments is

required to connect end to end, to make a
closed figure. Thus a polygon with a
minimum of three sides is known as
Triangle and it is also called 3-gon. An n-
sided polygon is called n-gon.

Polygon shape

By definition, we know that the polygon is

made up of line segments. Below are the
shapes of some polygons that are
enclosed by the different number of line
segments.
Types of Polygon
Depending on the sides and angles, the
polygons are classified into different
types, namely:

 Regular Polygon
 Irregular Polygon
 Convex Polygon
 Concave polygon

 Regular Polygon
If all the sides and interior angles of the
polygon are equal, then it is known as a
regular polygon. The examples of regular
polygons are square, equilateral triangle,
etc.

Regula Polygon Sample Figures:

 Irregular Polygon
If all the sides and the interior angles of
the polygon are of different measure,
then it is known as an irregular polygon.
This means that either the sides are of
different lengths or the angles are
different, which is sufficient for a polygon
to be said to be irregular. For example, a
scalene triangle, a rectangle, a kite, etc.

Irregular Polygon sample figure:

 Convex Polygon
If all the interior angles of a polygon are
strictly less than 180 degrees, then it is
known as a convex polygon. The vertex
will point outwards from the center of the
shape.

Ex. Of Convex Polygon:

 Concave Polygon
If one or more interior angles of a polygon
are more than 180 degrees, then it is
known as a concave polygon. A concave
polygon can have at least four sides. The
vertex points towards the inside of the
polygon.

However, a number of polygons are

defined based on the number of sides,
angles and properties.

 Angles of Polygon
As we know, any polygon has as many
vertices as it has sides. Each corner has a
certain measure of angles. These angles
are categorized into two types namely
interior angles and exterior angles of a
polygon.

 Interior Angle Property

The sum of all the interior angles
of a simple n-gon = (n – 2) × 180°
Where ‘n’ is equal to the number
of sides of a polygon.

For example, a quadrilateral has

four sides, therefore, the sum of
all the interior angles is given by:

Sum of interior angles of 4-sided

polygon = (4 – 2) × 180°
= 2 × 180°
= 360°

 Exterior angle property

The sum of interior and the
corresponding exterior angles at
each vertex of any polygon are
supplementary to each other.
For a polygon;
Interior angle + Exterior angle =
180 degrees
Exterior angle = 180 degrees –
Interior angle.
Yes ma’am.
Did you understand class?

E. Application
So now using this tangrams Tiles, we are
going to have our activity. Yes ma’am
Are ready?
Clap once if your ready. (Clapping once)

(clapping twice)
Clap twice if your ready.
Ok. So let’s call this activity “Guess and
Count Me In”

I am going to group you into 3 groups. So

let’s do the counts off from 1 to 3. (Starting the counts off)

Round 1.
In this game we have 2 rounds, so in the
1st round I am going show the shadow
image of the figure and then using your
tangram tiles you are going to assemble
and complete the image of the shadow
figure and after that your are going to
count the number of sides of the given
image.

The group who will finish first and got the

number of sides correctly will receive 3
points then the 2nd group will receive 2
points and the last is 1 point. Yes Ma’am .

Is it clear?
Ok very Good.

Round 2:
In this final round your are going to make
your own polygon figure and then you are
going to counts the total number of sides
of that particular figure and after that you
are asked to compute the sum of all
interior angles.
Given this formula:
(n-2)×180°

The group who will make the highest sum

of all interior angles will be the winner
and will receive 10 points and the 2nd to
the highest group will receive 6 points
and the smallest sum will receive 3 points.
And the group who will have the highest
score will be declaring as the winner will
receive a price. So, are you ready?

Ok. So in 3,2,1 Go. Yes ma’am .

(Busy doing group activity and have great

collaboration)

(After Activity, proceed to the declaration

of winners and giving of the price.) .
Let’s give a round of applause to the (Clapping their hands)
winners
Did you enjoy class? Yes ma’am .
I can see that you really enjoyed our
activity and at the same time you already
understand our lesson very well.
