Sixth Form Further Mathematics

Using logarithms

1. Express the following in terms of log p, log q, and log r:

(a) log pq, (f) log rq2 ,

(b) log pqr, √
(g) log p q,
(c) log pq , q
(h) log qr ,
(d) log pq
r ,
p
(e) log qr , (i) log pm q n .

2. Simplify the following:

(a) log p + log q, (d) 3 log q + 4 log p,

(b) 2 log p + log q, (e) n log x − log y,
(c) log q − log r, (f) log a + 2 log b − 3 log c.

3. Express the following as single logarithms:

(a) log 2 + log x, (e) 1 − log x,

(b) log 3 − log x, (f) 2 + log x,
(c) 2 log x − log 4, (g) 2 log x − 12 log(x − 1),
(d) log x − 2 log(1 − x), (h) 2 log x − 3 log y.

4. You are given that 5x = 2x+3 . By taking base 10 logarithms of both sides, and using the
log laws, find the value of x.

5. Solve the equation 7x−3 = 4x+6 .

6. Write each of the following logarithms in terms of logarithms with base 10.

(a) log2 9
(b) log5 14
(c) log100 3

1 [Turn over]
7. Make x the subject of the following:

(a) log4 x − log 4d = ky

(b) y = 20 × 5x
(c) log3 x = −0.5t
(d) log2 x − log2 (1 − x) = d

Harder problems
Do not use a calculator to solve the remaining problems.

8. To nine decimal places, log 2 = 0.301029996 and log 3 = 0.477121255

(a) Calculate log 5 and log 6 to three decimal places. Hence, or otherwise, show that

5 × 1047 < 3100 < 6 × 1047 .

Hence write down the first digit of 3100 .

(b) Find the first digit of each of the following numbers: 21000 , 210 000 , and 2100 000 .

9. The numbers 22020 and 52020 are written out in full. How many digits have been written
out in total?
