BASE EXPONENT
INTRODUCTION
TMIKODnCITOM
WEATSEONERIS?
The exponent of a number says how many times to use that
number inamultiplication.
It is written as a small number to the right and above the
base number.

In this example: 82 = 8 x 8 = 64
(The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a
multiplication.) Exponents are also called Powers ontices
exponent.

EXPONENT
BASE = POWER

POWER
a number written as
a base number with an exponent

BASE EXPONENT

LIKE THIS:

2: SAY 2 TO THE 5th POWER

EXPONENT
THE NUMBER OF TIMES BASE IS
MULTIPLIED BY ITSELF

2
2(14 time) *2(2d time) *2(3 time} -40
SQUARED= BASE
2 SAY 2 TO THE 2d POWER OR
TWO SQUARED
MOST MATHEMATICIAN SAY TWO
SQUARED

22 =2, 2= 4
3
CUBED = BASE
29 SAY 2 TO THE 3rd POWER OR
TWOCUBED
MOST MATHEMATICIANS SAY
TWO CUBED

23 =2,2,2 =8
What if the Exponent is 1, or 0?
Ifthe exponent is 1, then you just have the number
itself (example 91 = 9)
If the exponent is 0, then you get 1 (example 9o = 1)
Example: Powers of 5

52 1x5x5 25
1x5 5
50 1 1
5-1 1+5 0.2
52 1+5+ 5 0.04

If you look at that table, you will see tha

oste, zero or negative exponents are real
part o he same(fairly simple) pattern
Negative Exponents
ANEGATIVE EXPONENT MEANS HOW MANY TIMES TO DIVIDE BY
THE NUMBER.
Example: 81=1+8= 1/8 =0.125
Or many divides:
Example1550.008
But that enean easirway:
could al 5dlejated ke:
14(5355)
= ( 2 5 0.008
PONTS TO RENMENBERL
-3 means -(3x3x3) =-27

-3* means -(3x3x3x3) =-81

(-3)° means (-3) x(-3) x(-3) =-27

(-3)* means (-3)x(-3)x(-3)x(-3) =81

L¤WS OF EXPONÀNTS WITH EXAMPLE
3' x3 = 3+ = 3 = 243

3/3 = 3-2 = 3 = 81
Ifa is any number except o, then
a 1.
9/9 = 9 - =°=1
x)= (axbm (2) = (2)² x = 24 = 64

(10) = (2 X s) = 2 x s
