incorporating interactive activities, videos, and real-life examples to enhance engagement.

States of Matter Notes

**Introduction:**

- Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

- There are three main states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.

**Solid:**

- Particles are closely packed together and have a fixed shape.

- They vibrate but do not move from their positions.

- Examples include ice, rocks, and wooden blocks.

**Liquid:**

- Particles are close together but can move past one another.

- Takes the shape of its container.

- Examples include water, juice, and milk.

**Gas:**

- Particles are spread apart and move freely.

- No fixed shape or volume, fills the entire container.

- Examples include air, steam, and oxygen.

**Changes Between States:**

- Heating or cooling can cause matter to change states.

- Melting changes a solid to a liquid, while freezing changes a liquid to a solid.

- Evaporation changes a liquid to a gas, while condensation changes a gas to a liquid.

**Review Questions:**
1. What are the three main states of matter?

2. Give an example of each state.

3. How does heating or cooling affect the states of matter?

4. What is condensation?

5. Can you explain how ice cream melting is an example of a state change?

*Note: Encourage interactive discussions and hands-on activities to reinforce understanding.*
