EXAM FORMAT AND REGULATIONS

• METU student id card or another valid photo ID is required. otherwise your exam will not be
processed. Make available your Id card on your table during the exam;
• There are 10 multiple choice questions, each worth 10 points. Incorrect responses will be penalized to
discourage random guessing. It will be assigned −2 points for an incorrect answer and 0 points for
leaving the question blank.
• You may NOT bring any books, notes and any papers (even blank ones) to the exam.
• You will be given question papers and pre-printed multi-choice answer sheet in the exam. Check
them. If there is any missing problem or printing error, inform the proctor immediately.
• Fill in the “Name, ID, Date” boxes in the answer sheet with upright basic capital letters and using a
soft pencil. Put your signature next to the date.
• Do not forget writing your name on every page of the question paper at the beginning of the exam;
• You can use the empty spaces below the questions and the back pages as scratch paper to work out
your solutions, but, make sure that you transfer your answers to the answer sheet accurately and
clearly, because answer sheets only will be scanned into a computer and graded.
• There will be no regrading and no partial credit for any work done on question papers.
• Do not ask any question (including explanation of words) to the proctor during the exam;
• You MUST submit both your answer and question sheet to the proctor(s) at the end of the exam;
• Mobile phones and calculators are not allowed during the exam. Switch off your mobile and put a far
place on your table. Touching the phone during the examination is strictly forbidden. otherwise the
phone and the exam paper are taken and the student is required to leave the exam room immediately,
and is given zero for that exam.
• Students cannot leave the exam room in the first and the last 30 minutes and they also cannot enter
the exam 15 minutes after the start of the examination.
• By keeping the exam papers folded at all times, keep your solutions very carefully away from other
eyes around. If another student looks at your solution and copy it, you will also be questioned.
Good luck!

1. A particle starts at the origin; moves 15 m along the positive 𝑥 − axis, then,
5 m along the negative 𝑦-axis and finally 3 m along the negative 𝑥 − axis. The
journey takes 10 s. What is the ratio of the magnitude of the average velocity to
the average speed of the particle during this trip? (Attention: an incorrect
answer will be penalized 2 pts.)

a) -1
b) zero
c) 1.77
d) 0.57
e) 1

2. A block of mass 𝑚 = 2 kg is initially kept at rest at the highest point on an

inclined plane which is fixed to the inside of a truck, as shown in the figure. The
plane is tilted at an angle 𝜃 = 530 and its height is ℎ = 4 m. There is no friction
between the block and the incline. If truck is moving with constant velocity 𝑣 =
4 m/s on a horizontal road what is the distance travelled by the incline (in m)
relative to ground till the block reaches bottom of the incline? (Attention: an
incorrect answer will be penalized 2 pts.)

3. An object is thrown straight up from the edge of a cliff with an initial speed of
15 m/s, as in the figure, and it is observed that it takes the object 7 s to reach the
ground level. How long would it take the object to reach the ground level if it is
rather thrown straight down with the same speed? (Assume that air resistance is

rope, as seen in the figure. When the ball is at its lowest position it is moving at
a speed of 5 m/s and is speeding up at a rate of 4.5 m/s2. The acceleration of the
ball at this position (in m/s2) is expressed in terms of the Cartesian unit vectors
(see the figure), 𝑎⃗ = 𝑐𝑖̂ + 𝑑𝑗̂. What are the values of c and d, respectively?
(Attention: an incorrect answer will be penalized 2 pts.)
