Ethiopian Time
Unit Outcomes:
After completing this unit the student will be able to:
 describe the relationship between hour and minutes.
 read an analogue and digital clock in hours, minutes.
 relate days, weeks, months and years 
read a simple calendar.
12.1 Telling Time
We use seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and so on to
divide and budget our time. The standard unit of time is second (sec).

On an analog time clock, the shorter


hand is the hour hand. The longer
hand is the minute hand.

When telling time, we read the hour hand first, then the minute hand. Examples 1:
Write the time from the given analog clock.

The hour hand reads “1.” It looks


like the hour hand is almost to the
two, but we must continue to say
“1” until the minute hand goes
past the 12 again.

For the minute hand we count 5,10,15, 20, 25,


30, 35, 40, 45!
Therefore, the time is 1:45.

Example 2: What time is it?

a) 11:15 is read as “eleven fifteen” or “15 minutes after eleven”


b) 9:30 is read as “nine thirty” or “30 minutes after 9” or “half past 9.”
c) 2:55 is read as “two fifty-five”or“55 minutes after 2” or “5 minutes to 3.”

12.2 Minutesand Hours


1 hour (hr.) = 60 min

A quarter of an hour = 15 min

Half of an hour is 30min.

Example 1: Change 480 minutes to hours.


Solution
1hour=60 minutes 480÷60= 8 hours

Example 2: Change 55 minutes to seconds.


Solution
1 minute=60 seconds

55 minutes=55 60=3,300 seconds

Example 3: If it is now 12:30, what will be the time after 40 minutes?


Solution
From those 40 minutes, 30 minutes will take us up to 1:00. The other
10 minutes will take us to 1:10.

Example 4: If it is now 11:15, what was the time 2 hours and 10 minutes ago?
Two hours ago, the time was 9:15.The 10 minutes will take us back to 9:05.

a. Abiy‟s birthday party will start at 3:30. If he starts decorating the house at
1:30, how long does he have before the birthday party starts?

He has hours before the birthday party.

b. Mr. Ali‟s Arabic class starts at 2:40. If the class ends at 3:20, for how long is
Mr. Ali teaching?

Mr. Ali teaches for minutes.

c. It takes 2 hours to wash every shirt in the basket. There are 30 shirts. How
many minutes does it take to wash one shirt?

To wash one shirt,it takes minutes.

12.3 Days, Weeks, Months and Years


1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 month = 4 weeks
1 year = 365 days (366 days in leap year)
1 year =12 months
Example 1: Change 36 months to years, 1 year=12 months
36÷12=3
Therefore, 36 months are equal to 3 years.

Example 2: Change 5 years to months.


1 year=12
months
5 12=60
Therefore, 5 years are equal to 60 months.

Example 3: The journey from Addis Ababa to Aksum takes 3 days. How many
hours does the journey take?

The journey takes 3 days. 1 day=24 hours


Therefore, the journey takes 72 hours.

1. Complete the following.

a. 6 hours = minutes. b. 1 minute = seconds

c. 24 months = years. d. 7 years = months.

2. Solve the following word problems.


a. A building took 4 years to be built. How many months did it take?

It took months.

b. The number of days in February during the leap year is 29 days. How
many hours is February in the leap year?

February is hours in the leap year.

12.4 Calendar

- There are 365 days in a year. A leap year has 366 days. In a leap year, February is
29 days, otherwise it is 28 days.

- January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days.

- April, June, September, and November have 30 days.

- Dates can be written in short form by using numerals as “day/month/year” format.


Example 1: Write August 02, 2012 in short form.

The day is 02.

August is the 8th month of the year. So, August can be written as 08.

The year 2012 can be written „12‟ in short. Therefore, the short form
of August 02, 2012 is 02/08/12.

Example 2:Andualem was born on September 10th. Gelila was born on November
10th in the same year. How many months older is Andualem?

From September 10th to October 10th is 1 month.

From October 10th to November 10th is another 1 month. 1month + 1 month=2 months
Therefore, Andualem is two months older than Gelila.

1 year=12 months=365 days. In a leap


year, there are 366 days.
