Lesson one post and telecommunication

EXPRESS DELEVERY

This postal service is also known as SPECIAL DELIVERY. It is a


postal service whereby the post office delivers mails quicker than the
ordinary mails. Special charges are made for the service rendere.
The other postal service of the post office may include

1) Franking machine: this is also known as postage metal. It is a machine used


by the post office to print or stamp the values of the postage fee on
documents or mails without sticking actual stamps on them.
2) Post office box: these are small boxes located outside the post office walls
with numbers and keys assigned to owner/customers. The owners are
members of the public institutions or businessmen who pay annual
deposited of the post office.
3) Private mail bags (BMP): the service is of the post office is the same way
like the post office box. The only deference is that the boxes have specially
designed bag, locked and keyed and are only opened in the presents of the
post office head
4) Return office : this is the service in the post office which takes care of mails
and parcels which cannot be delivered because of either a wrong address
or other things.
5) Post stamps : this are small labels that are affixed on mails, items or
documents to show that the postage has been paid.

B) FINANCIAL SERVICES OF THE POST OFFICE

The financial services of a post office include;

 Means of payment
 Post office saving bank
 Postal cheque system
Means of payment: the various means of payment used by the post
office to assist businessmen include

a) Postal order: it is also known as mandates. It is a means of payment


through the post office used by business men or individuals to
transfer small amount of money to other individual or business men
who are in the same town or country.
b) Postal giro: this is also known as national giro. It is a banking service
that exist in most post, it operate like the current account of the
commercial banks. Payments are made with the use of Giro cheques.
While credit transfer and standing order facilities are provided under
this method of payment .
c) Money order : it is a payment method used by the post office to
transfer large amounts of money to particular individuals in the same
country. The charges paid for the amount of money send will depend
on the amount of money sent (if the money is high the charges will
be) the charges paid for the order are called poundage. there are
various types of money order
I. Letter money order
This money order is usually used for small amounts of money.
They are usually sent to the beneficiary through ordinary mails
if the money gets missing the sender will not be compensated.
II. Cash money order
It is a form obtained from the post office and filled by
those who wish to send specific amount of money when
the form is filled charges paid the sender is issued a
receipt as prove that a certain sum of money has been
sent and if it is missing he would compensated. This
money order can be used both internally and externally
III. Telegraphic money order
This is a service of post office which is no longer used. It
was a means of payment through which money was
speedily sent from one country to another through the
post office by means of a telegram.
IV. Internaltional money order

This is an electric means of sending money international


by the post office. It a means of transferring money
between countries that are either in the same economic
(known as preferential money order) grouping or the
same economic grouping (general money) and the
charges will be high.
V. Express money:
It is also known electronic money order. It is the fastest
means of sending money through the post office. The
sender writes out the amount, name of the receiver and
the amount to be sent on form presented by the office
clerk. This money is sent to the receiver through an
electronic machine.
VI. The post office service bank
This is a financial institution under the post office which
is out to facilitate and encourage saving by the public
cooperate bodies. This is to encourage economic
growth.
C) TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES
DEFINATION; it is the means of transmitting information, images as
well as signals over long distances using electronic devices such as
telephones; telegram; internet etc
Information transmitted is immediately delivered unlike the
post services.
The telecommunication services rendered include
a. Telephone: it is a device that is been used to transmit human
voices from place to another it is connected over long
distances by wire lines or wireless methods.
There are two types of telephone system fixed phone and
mobile phone system
